NBA Summer League 2015: Scores and Highlights from Sunday's Las Vegas Results

Tyler ConwayJul 12, 2015

The Las Vegas Summer League continued to kick into high gear Sunday, as another set of eight games took place at the Cox Pavilion and Thomas & Mack Center.

The schedule didn't feature many high-profile rookies going head-to-head, with perhaps the most notable matchup seeing No. 3 pick Jahlil Okafor and No. 16 selection Terry Rozier in action. That's a bit of a step down from Friday and Saturday, which each featured matchups between top-three picks.

That said, for a diversion away from the basketball-less landscape that is August and September, it's hard to do much better than Vegas. With that in mind, let's take a look in on all the action from summer league and assess what it all means.

Boston Celtics Def. Philadelphia 76ers, 85-76

Sunday belonged to the Boston Celtics' first three draft picks, who combined to score 59 points in an 85-76 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers.

Terry Rozier attempted only nine shots for the entire game but went 12-of-13 from the free-throw line, finishing with 22 points. Boston will also like his 2-of-3 clip from downtown. If Rozier can become a more consistent threat from deep, he has the potential to be a dynamic sixth man off the bench.

Jordan Mickey also had a great game, scoring 16 points and hauling in 11 rebounds to post a double-double. He also blocked four shots, capping off a strong end-to-end performance.

The shots Rozier didn't take ended up going to R.J. Hunter, who wasn't bashful with the ball in his hands. He took 15 shots on the night, including 11 three-pointers. Despite shooting 33 percent from the field, Hunter still scored 21 points, handing out three assists as well.

The Celtics won't mind Hunter chucking it up early and often, so long as he's knocking down his shots at a higher percentage than he did Sunday.

Portland Trail Blazers Def. Dallas Mavericks, 93-80

Dwight Powell's 25 points weren't enough to power the Dallas Mavericks to a win over the Portland Trail Blazers, which walked away with a 93-80 victory Sunday.

Four of Portland's starting five finished in double-digit scoring. Allen Crabbe paced the Blazers with 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting. Crabbe also had the touch from three-point range, missing only one of his four attempts from deep.

The Blazers will also be heartened by Noah Vonleh's 13 points and seven rebounds.

Portland isn't necessarily betting big on Vonleh, since the stakes aren't demonstrably high for the organization over the next couple of seasons. Losing LaMarcus Aldridge and Wesley Matthews has the franchise in a rebuild mode.

Vonleh was, however, one of the centerpieces in the Nicolas Batum trade. He could help move the Blazers in the right direction and play a major role as they work to become serious contenders in the Western Conference once again.

Starting over is never easy, but Portland is at least going about its rebuilding phase in the right way.

Atlanta Hawks Def. Golden State Warriors, 71-70

Glenn Robinson III knocked down a free throw with 25.3 seconds remaining, which proved to be the difference in a 71-70 victory for the Atlanta Hawks over the Golden State Warriors.

Although a free throw wound up winning them the game, the Hawks were otherwise dreadful at the charity stripe. They finished 9-of-22 as a team, with Robinson accounting for four of those made free throws.

He finished the game with 13 points, and Stephen Holt chipped in 13 of his own as well.

As much as Atlanta struggled from the field, Golden State was worse. The Warriors went 22-of-69 shooting, including 5-of-18 from deep. Maybe the reigning champs need to call Stephen Curry back from vacation and get him to Las Vegas to turn things around.

For the second game in a row, though, James Michael McAdoo made a strong account of himself. Coming off his 20-point showing against the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier in the week, the sophomore forward scored 17, going 5-of-11 from the field.

The Warriors don't need much help going into next year, but you have to wonder if McAdoo might be able to carry over his summer-league momentum and earn a regular role in Golden State's rotation.

Denver Nuggets Def. Sacramento Kings, 98-76

Emmanuel Mudiay stole the show Sunday in the Denver Nuggets' 98-76 win over the Sacramento Kings. The rookie point guard finished with a double-double, scoring 19 points and dishing out 10 assists. He did, however, commit six turnovers to somewhat dampen his performance.

Most believed drafting Mudiay was a shrewd move by the Nuggets, despite the presence of Ty Lawson, as they embark on their rebuild. Turnovers are likely to be a problem early on for Mudiay, but he looks every bit an NBA point guard so far.

Ian Clark also had a huge game, matching Mudiay's 19 points while adding four assists and five rebounds. Clark was also 7-of-10 from the floor, including 5-of-5 from behind the arc.

Willie Cauley-Stein was one of the few bright spots for the Kings. Although he grabbed just one rebound and blocked only one shot, the former Kentucky Wildcats star scored 15 points and even branched out to take a three-pointer, which missed the mark.

David Wear was Sacramento's leading scorer, contributing 19 points in a losing effort.

San Antonio Spurs Def. Milwaukee Bucks, 89-74

Kyle Anderson's brilliant summer continued, as the second-year forward scored 22 points and had five rebounds to lead the Spurs to an 89-74 win over Milwaukee.

Fresh off an impressive run in Utah Summer League, Anderson has now combined for 45 points in his first two contests in Vegas. He's been able to mix his off-the-dribble creation skills to get others shots and force his way to the line. In five summer league games overall, Anderson has not attempted fewer than six free throws.

Jarell Eddie and Jonathan Simmons were also in double figures. Former Ohio State standout Shannon Scott had a solid all-around night, scoring eight points, grabbing eight rebounds and dishing seven assists. Scott has shown range and heady passing skills since arriving in Vegas.

Five Bucks had at least 10 points, but none had more than 11. First-round pick Rashad Vaughn was among the four players who were tied at 11 points, but he shot 4-of-16 from the field. Vaughn has struggled to find his stroke through his first two games, taking his fair share of poor shots in the process.

The Bucks have largely gone with a bare-bones outfit in Vegas, so there isn't much of consequence to report otherwise. They're unsurprisingly 0-2.

Toronto Raptors Def. Chicago Bulls, 81-66

Norman Powell scored 19 points, with the Raptors holding Chicago to 31.4 percent shooting, as Toronto pulled off a 81-66 victory.

A second-round pick, Powell has shown an impressive comfort scoring. He's shot better than 50 percent in each of his first two games, combining for 39 points. He was one of five Raptors to score in double figures, though it was a bit of an up-and-down offensive affair.

Bruno Caboclo was in double figures for the second straight contest but shot 4-of-13 from the field. Still raw, Caboclo has shown an increased comfort beyond the three-point line in Vegas, knocking down five threes already. Delon Wright, Ronald Roberts and Drew Crawford also scored 10-plus points.

For Chicago, it was a bit of a mess everywhere. First-rounder Bobby Portis shot 1-of-10. Doug McDermott couldn't defend at any position. Exactly one player made at least half his shots.

McDermott and Cameron Bairstow tied for the team lead in points with 11. The Bulls were 3-of-24 from beyond the arc and had one more personal foul (23) than field goal made (22).

Houston Rockets Def. Phoenix Suns, 108-89

Six players scored in double figures, led by D.J. Kennedy with 21, as the Rockets pulled away in the fourth quarter to earn a 108-89 win over Phoenix.

Kennedy, a former St. John's star whose last NBA appearance came in 2012, also added seven rebounds and four steals. He and Glen Rice Jr. have emerged as the two leaders of a Houston team that's looked impressive in its 2-0 start.

Rice turned in his second straight 20-point effort, knocking down a trio of threes and adding four steals. The Rockets had 17 steals as a team, pressuring Phoenix ball-handlers into a series of bad turnovers. Rice was a breakout star last year at summer league but hasn't been able to parlay that into NBA success. The former Georgia Tech standout last played for the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the D-League after the Washington Wizards let him go.

Houston also got impressive performances from second-round pick Montrezl Harrell and former Temple guard Will Cummings. Cummings had 18 points and seven assists, forcing his way to the free-throw line nine times. Harrell battled some foul issues but managed an 11-point, eight-rebound outing in 26 minutes.

In defeat, the Suns got solid efforts from T.J. Warren and Archie Goodwin.

Warren had 22 points on 9-of-15 shooting and has gone for 42 over his first two games. Goodwin had 20 Sunday to match Warren's overall total, slashing his way to the rim and even knocking down a couple of threes. While he's one of a few notable third-year players on the roster, Goodwin remains just 20 years old; it's promising to see him show comfort beyond the arc.

Not so promising has been the performance of Devin Booker, who is a combined 6-of-23 in Vegas thus far.

D-League Select Def. Washington Wizards, 94-74

Scotty Hopson scored 20 points, with Romero Osby adding 18 off the bench, as the D-League select squad moved to 1-1 with a 94-74 victory over the Wizards.

The D-League Select led by 17 at halftime and never really wavered. Despite losing its first game, the veteran-laden squad is filled with players looking for one more opportunity.

Hopson, whose only NBA experience came with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2014, made seven of his 10 shot attempts and added six rebounds. In his first two summer league games, the former Tennessee star has put up 47 points—perhaps opening the eyes of NBA teams looking for a low-cost bench cog. In an interview with Keith Schlosser of Ridiculous Upside, head coach Scott Morrison described Hopson as a "showcase guy."

The Washington effort was led by a double-double from Jarrid Famous (21 points, 10 rebounds) and an 18-point, eight-rebound outing from Kelly Oubre. The first-round pick made just five of his 17 shots, however, and has looked noticeably uncomfortable from long range in his two games so far.

Because the game was such a blowout, it turned into a summer league affair where random events turned into entertainment. Hasheem Thabeet, the former No. 2 overall pick and D-League Select center, was thrown out after accumulating two technical fouls. Ben Golliver of Sports Illustrated made a salient point:

Overall, the whole thing inspired a ton of tongue-in-cheek reflection on Thabeet's career—something we all should probably be moving on from at this point.
