San Francisco Giants Trade Rumors: Tracking Hot Updates, News and Reaction

Kyle NewportJul 15, 2015

As the San Francisco Giants look to buck their trend of winning championships exclusively in even years, they may look to make some deals at the July 31 trade deadline to enhance their chances of repeating as World Series champs.

The Giants are currently just outside of the playoff picture. They have had to deal with a few injuries—like Matt Cain and Hunter Pence—but have been able to hang around. Now that they are beginning to get healthy, they could make a serious run at another title.

Check in throughout July to see what rumors the Giants are involved in and what deals they make before the trade deadline passes.

July 31: Acquire Mike Leake from Reds

2 of 5

The San Francisco Giants have acquired Mike Leake from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange right-hander Keury Mella and infielder/outfielder Adam Duvall.

The former first-round pick has a career 3.87 ERA, a number he has bested in three of the past four seasons—not including this season. He has been a back-of-the-rotation guy for most of his career, but he can be a No. 2 or No. 3 pitcher in most rotations.

Leake's overall numbers, mainly his 3.56 ERA, are hurt by a pair of ugly starts and a couple of not-so-good outings. Take those rough outings out and he has All-Star-caliber numbers.

As solid has he was early on this season, he has really turned it on as of late. The right-hander went 4-1 with a 1.25 ERA and a 0.833 WHIP in five July starts. He has allowed just two runs in his last 30 innings (0.60 ERA), going 4-0 in four starts.

All of those numbers look very good. However, they are even more impressive when you consider the fact that his home ballpark has been Great American Ball Park.

Leake never misses a start, which is what every club hopes for. He has made at least 30 starts in each of the past three seasons and threw a career-high 214.1 innings last season.

The 27-year-old is in the final year of his contract.

It's a very good move for San Francisco. The Giants didn't need to go out and acquire an ace like Johnny Cueto. They have an ace in Madison Bumgarner. What they needed is a solid middle-of-the-rotation pitcher, and that's exactly what they got.

Potential Trade Target: LHP Aroldis Chapman

3 of 5

The Giants have inquired about Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman, according to Fox Sports' Jon Morosi.

According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, Cincinnati is asking for "three higher-level prospects" in exchange for the hard-throwing southpaw.

Chapman made his fourth consecutive All-Star team this year. Through his first 42 outings, he has posted a 1.73 ERA and a 1.248 WHIP. While his 16 strikeouts per nine innings is the second-best rate of his career, his walks per nine (5.0) is also the second-highest of his six-year career.

There's really no doubt that Chapman is the best reliever. His fastball is second to none, and he can mix in a devastating changeup and a nasty slider when he wants. That arsenal makes it extremely tough for any hitter to get to him.

The 27-year-old reliever is making more than $8 million this season and will likely make eight figures next season through the arbitration process.

Given that Chapman is under control through the 2016 season, any team interested in him will need to put together a big package to acquire him. It'll be a steep price to pay, but he also would give any contending team a shutdown closer. That's pretty important come October.

Potential Trade Target: Rajai Davis

4 of 5

The Giants have checked in with the Detroit Tigers about outfielder Rajai Davis, according to Andrew Baggarly. However, it's still not clear if the Tigers will be buyers or sellers.

Davis is hitting .261 with two home runs, 10 doubles and seven triples in 66 games this season. While power isn't a big part of his game, speed is. To go with seven triples, he has recorded 14 stolen bases in 17 attempts this year.

The 34-year-old, who is making $5 million in 2015, is in the final year of his contract.

Potential Trade Target: 1B/LF Michael Morse

5 of 5

The Giants could be looking to bring back a familiar face as they look to improve their squad.

Not long after ESPN's Buster Olney reported that San Francisco would be looking for outfield help, Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald reported that the club is interested in bringing back Michael Morse.

Morse is slashing just .201/.263/.292 and has just seven extra-base hits (three home runs and four doubles) in 44 games this season. The 33-year-old missed more than a month this year after suffering a sprained finger.

Last year, Morse was a key part of San Francisco's run to a championship. He slashed .279/.336/.475 and hit 16 home runs and 32 doubles in a Giants uniform. Not every hitter can succeed at AT&T Park, but the fact that the veteran player has proven that he can do it has to be attractive to the Giants.

Morse signed a two-year, $16 million deal with the Marlins this past offseason. He is making $7.5 million this season and will make $8.5 million in 2016.
