Beverly Reportedly Gives Up Hope of Returning in Conference Finals
Tuesday, May 19
Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports reported that Beverly has given up on returning in the Western Conference finals. “It’s a no-go for the series,” a league source told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday. “He’s done trying.”
This jives with previous reports on Beverly's status. On May 18, ESPN.com's Marc Stein and Calvin Watkins reported Beverley is getting his cast removed soon but add that the team isn't getting his hopes up that he'll heal up in time to play.
The report also included what Rockets head coach Kevin McHale had to say about Beverley's status and how he still seems to have a ways to go in his recovery.
"Patrick is not going to get his pin out until June 4 or 5," said McHale. "I think it's hard to play with a pin in your (wrist)."
Beverley tore a ligament in his left wrist late in the regular season, forcing his team to adjust. MVP runner-up James Harden has taken the initiative to distribute even more during the playoffs, averaging eight assists per contest.
Basketball Insiders' Alex Kennedy weighed in on how Beverley's absence from the lineup may hinder Houston's ability to advance to the NBA Finals:
The Rockets will indeed have their hands full trying to guard league MVP Stephen Curry. It may be up to Harden to pick up the slack on defense so that Houston isn't left with a complete mismatch on that end of the court.
Even in the tough Western Conference, Houston has managed to get through the gauntlet thus far without Beverley and pull within four wins of advancing to the ultimate stage in pro basketball. It overcame a 3-1 deficit to stun the Los Angeles Clippers in the conference semifinals.
McHale's current squad is no stranger to adversity. Against this particular opponent, though, he'll have to scheme up a way to stop Curry and the high-octane Warriors offense. Otherwise, Beverley's value will be most apparent in a series that sets up well for Golden State.
