New York Jets: Latest Free-Agency News, Rumors and Speculation
The New York Jets weren't a part of the 2014 playoff picture, but they will play a major role in the NFL landscape this offseason.
Gang Green, now led by general manager-head coach pairing Mike Maccagnan and Todd Bowles, has a high draft pick and a boatload of cash to spend in free agency.
With the beginning of free agency right around the corner, there are plenty of rumors flying around about which players New York will go after.
Click through for the latest news and rumors surrounding the Jets as we approach March.
C.J. Spiller Showing Public Interest in New York
1 of 5
The Jets appear to be the favorite to land C.J. Spiller this offseason.
Spiller would be a perfect replacement for the departed Chris Johnson, and he would be a fantastic fit in Chan Gailey's offense.
Under Gailey's system, Spiller had his best season as a pro in 2012.
The former first-round selection has shown public interest in pairing back up with Gailey in New York, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN New York.
Spiller would be the perfect complement to Chris Ivory in the ground game. And at just 27 years old, he is still in his prime.
The former Clemson star should be wearing green and white by the time the regular season rolls around.
David Harris Will Have Other Suitors
2 of 5
David Harris is the heart of New York's defense.
The inside linebacker has been the leader of the unit for over a half-decade, and he is one of the most underrated defensive players in the entire league.
The Jets simply cannot afford to lose Harris, but they might have to compete with other teams in order to secure his services.
According to Vaughn McClure of ESPN, both the Falcons and Bears will pursue Harris if he hits the open market.
The Dolphins are also expected to go after the 31-year-old Michigan product, as they consider him the top inside linebacker available, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald.
With a boatload of other teams seemingly lining up for Harris this offseason, Gang Green must be able to work out a deal before the veteran hits the open market.
Jets Will Be Looking for Big Corners in the Open Market
3 of 5
The Jets could be even bigger players in free agency than originally thought, at least according to Tony Pauline of Draft Insider.
New York is said to be interested in acquiring big, young players on the defensive side of the ball, specifically at outside linebacker and cornerback.
Chris Culliver of the 49ers, Byron Maxwell of the Seahawks and Kareem Jackson of the Texans all fit that mold to a T.
Maxwell will be the most costly cover man this offseason, given his performance in the Legion of Boom the last couple of seasons.
Jackson, however, could be the most interesting free agent. The former first-round selection struggled in his first few years in the league, but he has bounced back to dominate in the last season-and-a-half.
With Gang Green's struggles at cornerback last season, it would be no surprise to see the team go after as many as two or three cover men in free agency.
Percy Harvin to the Patriots?
4 of 5
The Jets are in a difficult situation with Percy Harvin.
Harvin is one of the most electrifying players in the NFL, and he is capable of single-handedly winning a football game in any given week.
However, the Florida product hasn't been as productive as one would expect, and he is always an injury concern.
New York must decide whether to keep Harvin around in 2015 for a costly $10.5 million or cut him loose and open up some more cap space.
According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, Harvin has no interest in taking a pay cut to stay with the Jets. And if the speedy receiver is cut, the Patriots could come knocking.
Hearing that a potentially dangerous player could go to New England is scary for any Jets fan, as Bill Belichick and Co. are known to get the most out of players.
Nonetheless, the Patriots' interest in Harvin should have no effect on what the Jets decide to do.
Peterson to Jets?
5 of 5
Adrian Peterson got one step closer to returning to the field this week when U.S. District Judge David Doty overturned an NFL arbitrator's denial of Peterson's appeal.
The decision opens up the possibility of reinstatement for the former MVP running back.
With Peterson's relationship with the Vikings seemingly irreparable, there is a good chance the future Hall of Famer hits the open market this offseason.
While the Jets cannot be considered favorites to sign Peterson by any means, they are in a better situation than most teams.
Will Brinson of CBS Sports lists New York as one of five possible landing spots, given the team's financial flexibility and Big Apple setting.
Gang Green would give Peterson a chance for redemption on the biggest media stage, but it is difficult seeing the former Oklahoma star move to a team that won just four games a year ago.
Peterson to the Jets seems like a fantasy at the moment.
