Yahoo's Wojnarowski: Thunder Haven't Reopened Brook Lopez Talks
Wednesday, Feb. 11
Yahoo Sports insider Adrian Wojnarowski stated in an interview with Evan Roberts and Joe Benigno of WFAN (h/t CBS New York) that the Thunder haven't been actively pursuing Brooklyn Nets star Brook Lopez, as transcribed by NetsDaily.com:
"I think they still have interest in Lopez but they have not re-engaged. That could start up again possibly, but Oklahoma City was pretty adamant on 'here's the package we want to do for him.' They didn't want to give up any more. Now, they may feel differently at the trade deadline but maybe they get the Nets involved in a three-way or maybe a four-way.
"
Wojnarowski originally reported in January that Oklahoma City was deep into serious talks with Brooklyn to land Lopez, but the Nets backed out.
The Thunder won five of six going into the All-Star break, and FoxSportsSouthwest.com's Andrew Gilman hints no roster tweaks are necessary:
But Basketball Insiders' Steve Kyler noted the circumstances that make Oklahoma City a logical Lopez destination:
Lopez hasn't been playing transcendent basketball amid three straight Nets losses. Brooklyn has little optimism to cling to beyond being just outside the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Most of its roster moves have been geared toward winning now and haven't worked out.
Oklahoma City general manager Sam Presti was already involved in a big trade to acquire former Cleveland Cavaliers lottery pick Dion Waiters. It would be a bit of a shock to see OKC roll the dice again, particularly since it would cost considerable assets for Lopez to be traded.
Veteran Nick Collison and emerging rookie Mitch McGary ought to provide enough frontcourt depth for the Thunder to eventually rise in the West and achieve a decent playoff seed.
A team led by Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook shouldn't miss the postseason regardless of the supporting cast. Presti has done a nice job surrounding the superstars with viable pieces. Although it may not be enough for a championship this year, between now and the trade deadline is not the time for any drastic moves.
