Rookie Jordan Matthews Has Consecutive 100-Yard Receiving Games

Bleacher Report MilestonesNov 18, 2014

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jordan Matthews caught five passes for 107 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 53-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers to become just the second rookie in team history with back-to-back 100-yard receiving games, per Reuben Frank of CSN Philadelphia.

The second-rounder out of Vanderbilt was quiet for much of the first half Sunday, catching just one ball for five yards in the game's first 29 minutes while his team fell behind 30-3.

Matthews then broke out for a 40-yard reception in the final minute of the half, leading to a field goal that cut the lead to 30-6. His next catch was a 10-yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter, which cut the Packers' lead to 39-13.

With the outcome no longer in question, the 22-year-old rookie caught passes of 16 and 36 yards in the final quarter, putting him over 100 yards for a second straight week.

Matthews' first 100-yard outing was quite a bit more memorable, as his seven receptions for 138 yards and two touchdowns led the Eagles to a 45-21 win over the Carolina Panthers.

While the second performance was largely earned once it became obvious the Eagles would lose, Matthews still joins current Washington Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson as the only players with consecutive 100-yard receiving outings as rookies for the Eagles.

Jackson, also a second-round draft pick, accomplished the feat back in 2008, going over the 100-yard mark in the first two games of his career.

Matthews may have taken a bit longer to get settled in, but he's now on pace for 70 receptions, 893 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns—numbers that would make him a strong Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate most seasons.

However, with the 2014 rookie class including fellow early-blooming wide receivers like Mike Evans, Sammy Watkins and Kelvin Benjamin, the Vandy man will need a huge final six games to enter the Offensive Rookie of the Year conversation.
