College Football Rankings Week 13: B/R's Official Top 25

Brian PedersenNov 15, 2014

Mississippi State, look what you've gone and done.

By falling at Alabama on Saturday, the Bulldogs have assured that there will be a new No. 1 in pretty much every poll of significance. But who, exactly, will take over that top spot in the College Football Playoff rankings?

Maybe you can get a good idea by checking out our latest rankings, fresh out of the oven to warm you after a frigid Saturday of college football action.

The Top 25 is voted on by 20 members of Bleacher Report's college football team: writers Keith Arnold, Ben Axelrod, Phil Callihan, Michael Felder, Justin Ferguson, Andrew Hall, Kyle Kensing, David Kenyon, Ben Kercheval, Adam Kramer, Brian Leigh, Brian Pedersen, Barrett Sallee, Brad Shepard, Erin Sorensen, Marc Torrence and Greg Wallace, as well as editors Eric Bowman, Hunter Mandel and Max Rausch.

Each voter submits their ballots based on observations made during the just-completed week's games. Teams receive 25 points for a first-place vote, all the way down to one point for being ranked 25th, and then the top 25 vote-getters are ranked in order of their point totals.

Check out B/R's Week 13 poll, then give us your thoughts in the comments section.

Duke saw its four-game win streak come to an end with a 17-16 home loss to Virginia Tech on Thursday, and it also knocked the Blue Devils out of first place in the ACC's Coastal Division.

Duke still controls its destiny, though, thanks to a head-to-head win over Georgia Tech. If the Devils win their final two games (Thursday against North Carolina, and Nov. 29 against Wake Forest), they will win the tiebreaker and play Florida State in the ACC title game next month.

  • Duke (40)
  • LSU (28)
  • Louisville (17)
  • West Virginia (16)
  • Clemson (11)
  • Minnesota (10)
  • Memphis (5)
  • Iowa (3)
  • Texas A&M (3)

Cody Kessler threw for 371 yards and four touchdowns, while Nelson Agholor was on the receiving end of a school-record 16 catches for 216 yards and two TDs. He became the first Trojans receiver to record back-to-back 200-yard games.

USC won despite 14 penalties for 159 yards.

24. (Tie) Oklahoma Sooners

3 of 26

Week 12 result: Won 42-30 at Texas Tech

Oklahoma (7-3, 4-3 Big 12) improved to 5-1 away from home, rallying from a 21-7 deficit early in the third quarter to win in Lubbock.

Samaje Perine ran for 213 yards and three touchdowns, while Cody Thomas, starting in place of injured quarterback Trevor Knight, ran for 103 yards and a TD to go with 133 passing yards and a score. Thomas also threw three interceptions, but his four-yard TD run with 10:06 left gave the Sooners a 28-24 lead they'd never relinquish.

Oklahoma ran for 384 yards.

23. Notre Dame Fighting Irish

4 of 26

Week 12 result: Lost 43-40 (in OT) vs. Northwestern

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. Louisville

Poll points: 69

Last week's ranking: 14th

Notre Dame (7-3) is on a two-game losing streak for the first time since dropping the final two games of the 2011 season, following up last week's loss at Arizona State by blowing an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter and then falling in overtime.

After Kyle Brindza missed a 42-yard field goal on the Fighting Irish's OT possession—his second missed kick of the game to go with a blocked extra point—Northwestern won it on a 41-yard Jack Mitchell field goal.

The Irish led 40-29 after Everett Golson threw an 11-yard touchdown to William Fuller with 10:34 left in the fourth quarter. They then allowed Northwestern to score 11 points in the final 4:10, including a 45-yard field goal from Mitchell with 10 seconds left after Cam McDaniel lost a fumble.

Notre Dame had four turnovers, two by Golson (giving him 19 in the past seven games) and another that Northwestern returned for a score. Golson did have 365 yards of total offense, with three passing TDs and a 61-yard rushing score.

22. Missouri Tigers

5 of 26

Week 12 result: Won 34-27 at Texas A&M

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 at Tennessee

Poll points: 77

Last week's ranking: Not ranked

Missouri (8-2, 5-1 SEC) remained in the driver's seat to win the East Division for a second straight year, using a 28-point third quarter to rally on the road.

The Tigers trailed 13-6 at the half and were down 20-13 when they ran off 21 points in just over eight minutes in the third quarter to go up 34-20. Then, after A&M scored to get within a touchdown and got close to the goal line, its defense stepped up and stuffed the Aggies on a fourth-down pass play with 2:47 left.

Russell Hansbrough ran for 199 yards and two touchdowns, scoring on runs of 49 and 45 yards in the third quarter. Missouri ran for 335 yards and got 252 passing yards and a TD from Maty Mauk.

Missouri takes the East if it wins out, but another loss gives the division to Georgia.

21. Colorado State Rams

6 of 26

Week 12 result: Bye

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. New Mexico

Poll points: 92

Last week's ranking: 24th

Colorado State (9-1, 5-1 Mountain West) took an eight-game win streak into its bye week, and when the Rams return to action next weekend, they'll continue to fight for the Mountain Division title and a potential berth into a College Football Playoff bowl game.

Quarterback Garrett Grayson has thrown for 3,024 yards and 26 touchdowns, with leading receiver Rashard Higgins catching 67 passes for 1,280 yards and an FBS-leading 13 TDs. Higgins missed CSU's last game, a 49-22 win over Hawaii, with a shoulder injury.

The Rams have their highest win total in a season since they finished 10-3 in 2002.

20. Nebraska Cornhuskers

7 of 26

Week 12 result: Lost 59-24 at Wisconsin

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. Minnesota

Poll points: 104

Last week's ranking: 11th

Nebraska (8-2, 4-2 Big Ten) got run over by Wisconsin and Melvin Gordon on the road, falling out of first place in the West Division despite leading by 14 points in the second quarter.

The Cornhuskers went up 17-3 on a five-yard Tommy Armstrong Jr. touchdown run, but then Gordon broke off a 62-yard TD run for the first of his four scores. The last, at the end of the third quarter, gave Wisconsin a 52-17 lead and saw Gordon set the FBS single-game rushing record with 408 yards.

Nebraska allowed 581 rushing yards, after surrendering only 1,114 yards on the ground in its first eight games. Its run game only managed 118 yards (of a team total of 180), with Ameer Abdullah being held to 69 yards on 18 carries.

19. Marshall Thundering Herd

8 of 26

Week 12 result: Won 41-14 vs. Rice

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 at UAB

Poll points: 122

Last week's ranking: 22nd

Marshall (10-0, 6-0 Conference USA) had little trouble romping at home against arguably its toughest opponent on the schedule, winning for the 11th straight time while knocking off the defending conference champs in a rematch of last season's title game.

Quarterback Rakeem Cato extended his FBS record for consecutive games with a touchdown pass to 42, tossing four TDs along with 297 yards. He now has 117 career TD passes, surpassing Chad Pennington to become the Thundering Herd's all-time leader.

Devon Johnson returned after missing last week's win at Southern Mississippi because of a knee injury. He rushed for 199 yards and a TD, his eighth 100-yard game of the season.

18. Utah Utes

9 of 26

Week 12 result: Won 20-17 (in 2 OT) at Stanford

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. Arizona

Poll points: 125

Last week's ranking: 25th

Utah (7-3, 4-3 Pac-12) won its second overtime game in three tries this season, scoring 13 points after regulation to improve to 4-1 on the road.

Kenneth Scott's three-yard touchdown catch from Travis Wilson in the second overtime came after the Utes held Stanford to a 51-yard field goal. Kaelin Clay had a 25-yard TD catch to open the first OT, then Stanford forced another period.

Wilson threw for 177 yards with his two TDs, also scoring on a two-yard run midway through the second quarter to tie the game 7-7. Neither team scored in the second half, as Utah finished with only 294 total yards compared to 247 for Stanford.

The Utes have won at Michigan, UCLA, Oregon State and Stanford. Their only road loss came at Arizona State, in OT.

17. Auburn Tigers

10 of 26

Week 12 result: Lost 34-7 at Georgia

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. Samford

Poll points: 159

Last week's ranking: 9th

Auburn (7-3, 4-3 SEC) had its worst offensive performance in two seasons under head coach Gus Malzahn, scoring on its opening drive and then never again.

The Tigers finished with only 292 yards, their lowest output since gaining 163 in the season-ending 49-0 loss at Alabama in November 2012. Cameron Artis-Payne scored on a 26-yard run just over four minutes into the game, but he finished with 86 yards as Auburn ran for only 150 on 35 carries.

Nick Marshall had 112 yards and an interception on 11-of-23 passing along with 41 yards rushing, and Auburn committed three turnovers while allowing Georgia to run for 289 yards.

16. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

11 of 26

Week 12 result: Won 28-6 vs. Clemson

Week 13 matchup: Bye

Poll points: 180

Last week's ranking: 23rd

Georgia Tech (9-2, 6-2 ACC) wrapped up conference play with a defensive performance over Clemson, getting two touchdowns on interception returns to move into a virtual tie for the Coastal Division lead.

Jamal Golden brought back a pick 85 yards for a TD late in the first quarter, then Chris Milton scored on a 62-yard interception return toward the end of the third. The Yellow Jackets defense outscored Clemson on the day. All told, Tech held the Tigers to 190 yards and intercepted Cole Stoudt three times.

Tech's run game wasn't as productive as normal, but it still managed to run for 251 yards against a Clemson defense that came in allowing 90.9 yards per game on the ground. That rushing attack suffered a major blow, though, when Broderick Snoddy suffered a broken leg in the first half.

15. Arizona State Sun Devils

12 of 26

Week 12 result: Lost 35-27 at Oregon State

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. Washington State

Poll points: 226

Last week's ranking: 6th

Arizona State (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12) blew a 10-point halftime lead, knocking it out of sole possession of first place in the South Division and putting a major dent in its playoff hopes.

The Sun Devils trailed 14-3 before running off 21 straight points, the last coming on a 28-yard fumble-return touchdown by Antonio Longino midway through the second quarter. But Oregon State fought back, getting within three points late in the third quarter and then using two fourth-quarter TDs to get the win.

Taylor Kelly was intercepted by Michael Doctor with 1:38 left, with Doctor bringing it back 35 yards for the game-icing TD. Kelly finished with 264 passing yards and two TDs along with two interceptions.

14. Arizona Wildcats

13 of 26

Week 12 result: Won 27-26 vs. Washington

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 at Utah

Poll points: 233

Last week's ranking: 17th

Arizona (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12) got a 47-yard field goal from Casey Skowron as time expired, capping a career day for the kicker and redeeming himself on a missed kick that cost the Wildcats a game earlier this season.

Skowron made the kick after Washington called timeout on his initial try, which sailed wide right. It was a similar scenario to the Wildcats' 28-26 home loss to USC last month, when after being iced on a made kick in the final minute he missed on his second attempt.

In addition to a pair of fourth-quarter field goals, Skowron also scored on an 18-yard touchdown run on a fake field goal late in the first half. Arizona recovered a fumble shortly after, and Nick Wilson's eight-yard TD run with eight seconds left before halftime gave the Wildcats a 21-17 lead.

Wilson ran for 104 yards and two TDs, making up for a bad day by quarterback Anu Solomon. He threw for 242 yards on 17-of-39 passing with two interceptions.

13. Wisconsin Badgers

14 of 26

Week 12 result: Won 59-24 vs. Nebraska

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 at Iowa

Poll points: 246

Last week's ranking: 21st

Wisconsin (8-2, 5-1 Big Ten) did more than just blow out Nebraska in a battle for first place in the West Division; it did so behind a record-setting performance from superstar running back Melvin Gordon.

Gordon broke the FBS single-game rushing record with 408 yards on 25 carries, doing so in only three quarters. He scored four touchdowns, his last a 26-yard score on the final play of the third quarter that put him past LaDainian Tomlinson's mark of 406 set in 1999 when he was at TCU. Gordon now has 1,909 yards and 23 rushing TDs this season.

"It's a luxury that I've never had before as a coach," Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen told The Associated Press (h/t ESPN.com). "To see a performance like that was amazing."

He didn't score for the first time until early in the second quarter, when he sparked a 56-0 run that erased an early 17-3 deficit. The Badgers ran for 581 yards, which actually wasn't their best output of the season after running for 644 yards in September against Bowling Green.

Wisconsin, which came in with the nation's top-ranked defense in terms of yards allowed, held Nebraska to 180 yards and limited running back Ameer Abdullah to 69 yards.

12. UCLA Bruins

15 of 26

Week 12 result: Bye

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. USC

Poll points: 267

Last week's ranking: 16th

UCLA (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12) won its last four games before taking this past weekend off, staying in contention for the South Division title as it heads into a final stretch against a pair of in-state rivals at home.

The Bruins host USC next, then end with Stanford, both at the Rose Bowl. They're a game behind division leader Arizona State, but they hold the tiebreaker due to a 62-27 win at ASU in September.

Quarterback Brett Hundley has accounted for 3,111 yards of total offense and 24 touchdowns this season, while running back Paul Perkins has run for 1,169 yards and six TDs.

11. Kansas State Wildcats

16 of 26

Week 12 result: Bye

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 20 at West Virginia

Poll points: 307

Last week's ranking: 12th

Kansas State (7-2, 5-1 Big 12) had the weekend off as it regrouped following a loss at TCU last time out. The Wildcats still are in the hunt for the conference title, but they have to play two of three away from Manhattan to finish the season, beginning with Thursday's visit to West Virginia.

The Wildcats have gotten 2,575 yards of total offense from quarterback Jake Waters, who has thrown 13 touchdowns and run for seven more. Receivers Tyler Lockett and Curry Sexton have combined for 113 catches, 1,601 yards and 10 scores.

10. Michigan State Spartans

17 of 26

Week 12 result: Won 37-15 at Maryland

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. Rutgers

Poll points: 318

Last week's ranking: 13th

Michigan State (8-2, 5-1 Big Ten) bounced back from last week's East Division-deciding loss at Ohio State with a solid road win, getting a strong game from running back Jeremy Langford.

Langford ran for 138 yards and two touchdowns, part of 242 rushing yards for the Spartans. Connor Cook added 240 passing yards, but he completed only 14 of 31 passes.

MSU held Maryland to six rushing yards and forced four turnovers, intercepting C.J. Brown three times and getting a 22-yard interception-return TD from C.J. Williamson.

9. Georgia Bulldogs

18 of 26

Week 12 result: Won 34-7 vs. Auburn

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. Charleston Southern

Poll points: 323

Last week's ranking: 15th

Georgia (8-2, 6-2 SEC) combined a two-headed running attack with a surprisingly stout defense to stifle Auburn and wrap up conference play still with a chance to win the East Division.

Behind 144 yards and two touchdowns from freshman Nick Chubb—his fifth straight 100-yard game—and 138 yards and a score from Todd Gurley in his first game following a four-game suspension, the Bulldogs spotted Auburn a 7-0 lead and then controlled the remainder of the game.

The Bulldogs ran for 289 yards and held Auburn's run game to 150 yards and the Tigers as a whole to just 292 yards of total offense.

Georgia trails Missouri by a game in the loss column but holds the tiebreaker thanks to a 34-0 win at Missouri. If the Tigers lose once more, Georgia represents the East in the SEC title game.

8. Ole Miss Rebels

19 of 26

Week 12 result: Bye

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 at Arkansas

Poll points: 349

Last week's ranking: 10th

Ole Miss (8-2, 4-2 SEC) is out of the running for the West Division title, and likely no longer in contention for the playoff semifinals. With a strong finish, the Rebels can still make it into a major bowl game while reaching double digits in victories for the first time since 2003.

Quarterback Bo Wallace has thrown for 2,556 yards and 22 touchdowns this season to lead Ole Miss' offense, but its most productive side has been the defense. The Rebels entered the weekend ranked ninth nationally in yards allowed, at 309.8, and their 11.9 points-allowed-per-game scoring average is No. 1 in FBS.

The Rebels, who last time out beat FCS school Presbyterian, have lost two straight in the conference for the third time in the past two seasons.

7. Baylor Bears

20 of 26

Week 12 result: Bye

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. Oklahoma State

Poll points: 399

Last week's ranking: 7th

Baylor (8-1, 5-1 Big 12) saw its playoff chances get a bit of a boost despite not playing Saturday, thanks to TCU's struggle to win at Kansas. The Bears have a head-to-head win over TCU but currently sit behind the Horned Frogs in most rankings, including the ones from the College Football Playoff selection committee.

The Bears' last game was their best of the season, winning 48-14 at Oklahoma after trailing 14-3. It was their first-ever win in Norman, getting them that much closer to a second straight Big 12 title.

Quarterback Bryce Petty has paced the nation's top-ranked scoring (50.1 points per game) and total offense (585.1 yards per game), throwing for 2,421 yards and 21 touchdowns despite missing a game because of injury. Shock Linwood has run for 12 TDs, while Corey Coleman leads a deep receiving unit with 796 yards and eight scores.

6. TCU Horned Frogs

21 of 26

Week 12 result: Won 34-30 at Kansas

Week 13 matchup: Bye

Poll points: 405

Last week's ranking: 5th

TCU (9-1, 6-1 Big 12) nearly saw its playoff hopes go up in smoke in front of a sparse crowd in Lawrence, trailing by 10 points midway through the third quarter before coming alive to remain atop the Big 12 standings.

The Horned Frogs scored 14 points in 50 seconds to retake the lead at 31-27, following up a 24-yard touchdown run by Aaron Green with a 69-yard punt-return score from Cameron Echols-Luper. Green ran for 128 yards and two TDs in his second start in place of B.J. Catalon, out with a shoulder injury.

Trevone Boykin threw for 330 yards with a TD and an interception on 26-of-36 passing, but the Frogs defense was picked apart by Kansas quarterback Michael Cummings. He threw for 332 yards and two TDs and had a rushing score.

5. Ohio State Buckeyes

22 of 26

Week 12 result: Won 31-24 at Minnesota

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. Indiana

Poll points: 407

Last week's ranking: 8th

Ohio State (9-1, 6-0 Big Ten) continued its late push up the playoff ranks with an impressive win at Minnesota in unfavorable conditions, getting led by a freshman quarterback who has thrust himself into the Heisman discussion.

J.T. Barrett set a school record for touchdowns produced by a quarterback, throwing for 200 yards and three TDs and rushing for 189 yards with an 86-yard score. He's accounted for 38 TDs this season, breaking the record of 36 set last season by Braxton Miller, the player he stepped in for just before the start of this year after Miller suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.

"Barrett can't be stopped by anybody right now, not even Mother Nature," wrote Bill Bender of Sporting News.

Barrett broke off his long TD run less than five minutes into the game, then later in the first quarter hooked up with Jalin Marshall for a 57-yard TD pass. In the second half, he hit Michael Thomas for a 30-yard TD pass and connected with Evan Spencer for a 22-yard scoring strike.

OSU overcame three turnovers that kept Minnesota in the game, but despite allowing 145 rushing yards and three TDs to David Cobb, the Buckeyes twice intercepted Mitch Leidner and held him to 85 passing yards.

4. Mississippi State Bulldogs

23 of 26

Week 12 result: Lost 25-20 at Alabama

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. Vanderbilt

Poll points: 424

Last week's ranking: 1st

Mississippi State (9-1, 5-1 SEC) nearly pulled off a massive comeback after falling behind 19-0, but in the end saw its perfect season and 12-game win streak end while its place in the playoff rankings is sure to take a hit from the top spot.

The Bulldogs, who came in ranked No. 1 by the College Football Playoff selection committee, outgained Alabama 428-335 but were hampered by three interceptions thrown by Dak Prescott. Prescott threw for 290 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for two scores, and he brought MSU back from the big deficit to get within 19-13 early in the fourth quarter.

He didn't get help from running back Josh Robinson, who was held to a season-low 37 yards and was tackled in the end zone for a safety that gave Alabama an early 2-0 lead.

MSU is still very much a player in both the SEC West and the playoff race, with its season finale at Ole Miss still to come. "Except for being undefeated, every other goal is still ahead of us," coach Dan Mullen told the AP (h/t ESPN.com).

3. Oregon Ducks

24 of 26

Week 12 result: Bye

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. Colorado

Poll points: 474 (three first-place votes)

Last week's ranking: 3rd

Oregon (9-1, 6-1 Pac-12) has already clinched the North Division, and with only games against teams with losing records remaining before the Pac-12 title game Dec. 5, it's all about maintaining momentum and holding onto its current playoff ranking.

The Ducks are fourth in the nation in scoring, at 46 points per game, and they rank fifth in total offense at 531.2 yards per outing. Quarterback Marcus Mariota is a Heisman front-runner thanks to his 3,304 yards of total offense, with 29 passing touchdowns, eight rushing scores and a receiving TD.

Freshman running back Royce Freeman has gained 945 yards with 14 TDs, and Oregon has scored at least 38 points in all but one game this season.

2. Florida State Seminoles

25 of 26

Week 12 result: Won 30-26 at Miami

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. Boston College

Poll points: 482 (nine first-place votes)

Last week's ranking: 2nd

Stop us if you've heard this before.

Trailing 16 points twice in the second quarter, the defending national champion Florida State Seminoles (10-0, 7-0 ACC) put together another late rally to win their 26th straight game. It marked the seventh time this season they have trailed, including three times in the fourth quarter, yet in the end they made the plays to come through.

This time it was a 53-yard field goal from Roberto Aguayo, followed not long after by Dalvin Cook's game-winning 26-yard touchdown run with 3:05 left. Then, with Miami driving, Jalen Ramsey sealed the victory with an interception in the final minute.

"The Seminoles have had so many bounces at key times go their way this year, they almost seem blessed," wrote USA Today's Dan Wolken.

In this game, the biggest of those breaks came late in the third quarter when Jameis Winston's pass was batted in the air but right into the arms of Karlos Williams for an 11-yard TD that made it 23-17 Miami.

Winston threw for 304 yards with an interception on 25-of-42 passing, while Cook had 92 rushing yards and two scores. FSU was outgained 492-418, giving up 130 rushing yards to Miami's Duke Johnson.

1. Alabama Crimson Tide

26 of 26

Week 12 result: Won 25-20 vs. Mississippi State

Week 13 matchup: Nov. 22 vs. Western Carolina

Poll points: 483 (eight first-place votes)

Last week's ranking: 4th

Alabama (9-1, 6-1 SEC) seemed left for dead a month or so ago, after losing at Ole Miss and then narrowly beating Arkansas. Yet since then the Crimson Tide have done nothing but win, often impressively, and now have knocked off the last remaining unbeaten team in the conference.

"When you beat the No. 1 team in the country, that's a significant accomplishment," Alabama coach Nick Saban told Marquavius Burnett of The Anniston Star.

The Tide jumped out to a 19-0 lead, thwarting Mississippi State quarterback Dak Prescott while also moving the ball effectively. But then their lead was down to 19-13 early in the fourth quarter, with the visiting Bulldogs having all the momentum. Yet what followed was one of the most significant drives of the season.

The 15-play, 76-yard drive was capped by a seven-yard T.J. Yeldon scoring run with 8:09 left, bumping the lead to 15. MSU scored with 15 seconds left but then couldn't recover the onside kick.

Though Yeldon scored, it was quarterback Blake Sims who was key on the drive. He threw for 211 yards and a TD for the game, but on that drive he had third-down runs of 10 and 11 to keep the ball moving.

The Tide intercepted Prescott three times, while they did not turn the ball over for just the second time this season.
