Winners and Losers from Liga MX Week 14

Karla Villegas GamaOct 27, 2014

Week 14 of the Liga MX brought the best comebacks of the season, as a result of bravery, courage and heart.

America are still in command of the 2014 Apertura tournament despite losing to Queretaro at Estadio Corregidora.

Guadalajara fought until the end of their match against Tijuana to secure one point and break their winless streak on home soil.

The Monterrey Derby didn't disappoint, and it gave us 90 minutes of intensity and good football.

Leon did what no other club has done since last year, by defeating Toluca on home soil.

Also, as of this week, Dorlan Pabon is no longer the tournament's top scorer.

Let's take a look at the winners and losers from Matchday 14.

Winner: Camilo Sanvezzo

1 of 9

Camilo Sanvezzo had one of his best performances of the 2014 Apertura in the game versus America.

The Queretaro forward scored twice and made an assist in the 3-2 win over Las Aguilas. He also completed 78 percent of the passes he sent.

The Brazilian became the tournament's top scorer, as he reached 10 goals in 14 appearances, one better than Monterrey's Dorlan Pabon and Leon's Mauro Boselli.

With this result, Queretaro sit ninth in the general table, just one position shy from the Liguilla qualification zone.

Losers: America

2 of 9

America lost for the third time in the 2014 Apertura. Despite the 3-2 loss to Queretaro, Las Aguilas still lead the tournament with 29 points.

However, Antonio Mohamed's side could have grabbed at least one point. The club came from behind, as they overturned a 2-0 disadvantage.

Oribe Peralta and Luis Mendoza managed to tie the game. Until the 90th minute, it seemed like both clubs would leave with one point, but Camilo Sanvezzo took advantage of a defensive mistake by Paolo Goltz and secured the victory for his side.

Now, America only have a two-point advantage over Atlas.

Winners: Leon

3 of 9

Leon are back on track. After a dreadful 3-0-8 record (11 matchdays), La Fiera have secured three successive victories.

They defeated Queretaro and Guadalajara in Week 12 and 13, respectively, which didn't seem to be a feat, as both clubs were having trouble themselves.

But their 2-3 victory over Toluca, at Estadio Nemesio Diez, was quite a statement. Diablos Rojos were unbeaten on home soil during the 2014 Apertura, the last time they lost on their own turf was in the 2014 Clausura Liguilla, also against Leon.

These three points put Gustavo Matosas' side closer than ever to the Liguilla; they sit 10th with 18 points.

Losers: UANL

4 of 9

UANL were in command of the Monterrey Derby, held at Estadio Tecnologico, their archenemy's ground.

Tigres showed their power through the left flank in the first half, where they crafted the plays of their two goals.

However, the home team came to the second half inspired and playing flawlessly. Jesus Zavala put the ball away first, with a powerful header, while Guillermo Madrigal netted the equalizer just four minutes before the final whistle, with the score even at 2-2.

Ricardo Ferretti's side was superior in several areas. For starters, they completed 84 percent of the passes they sent, while Monterrey completed 78 percent. Also, Tigres completed 21 crosses and Monterrey only accomplished 17.

UANL won 58 percent of the aerial battles in which they were involved and intercepted 17 balls, two more than Rayados.

Winners: Cruz Azul

5 of 9

Cruz Azul took advantage of playing against the worst team of the tournament, securing a 3-1 victory on home soil.

La Maquina needed 10 minutes to open the scoring, after a superb individual effort by Mariano Pavone. However, the club faded away and Morelia took control of the match and eventually tied the game.

The home team owned the second half and with a long-distance shot from Christian Gimenez and another superb play by Mariano Pavone, Cruz Azul went back to the winner's circle.

As of now, Luis Fernando Tena's boys are set for the Liguilla, but there's a lot of room of improvement, especially in the back line. They lost 62 percent of their aerial duels and only won 43 percent of their tackles.

Losers: Santos Laguna

6 of 9

Santos Laguna were unable to win on home soil for the third successive opportunity. The last time they grabbed three points at the Estadio Corona was in Matchday 8, when they faced Leon.

This time, Los Guerreros met UNAM, a squad they hadn't defeated since the 2012 Apertura, and the result wasn't different—they left the pitch with a 1-1 draw.

The home team seemed to have the three points in the bag after 78 minutes, when Javier Orozco opened the scoring. Unfortunately, Daniel Luduena defeated Oswaldo Sanchez with a powerful shot from outside the box.

Pumas' goal came from a defensive mistake, in which David Cabrera intercepted a pass by Mauro Cejas.

Santos Laguna fell from eighth to 11th in the general table, outside the qualification zone.

Winner: Javier Orozco

7 of 9

Javier Orozco is officially the best Mexican forward of the Liga MX. Chuletita is going through his best season since he joined Santos Laguna in the 2013 Apertura.

Orozco put the ball away in Matchday 14 against UNAM to increase his tournament-total to six goals, leaving Eduardo Herrera and Oribe Peralta behind, as each of them have netted five times.

The Santos Laguna footballer is just two goals shy from his most successful tournament, the 2013 Clausura, when he played with Cruz Azul.

Losers: Tijuana

8 of 9

Tijuana could have tied Cruz Azul in eighth place of the general table, if they had kept their advantage over Guadalajara.

Xolos were down 2-1 in the first half, but Dario Benedetto and Alfredo Moreno turned things around. This game them a one-goal advantage over Chivas, but they couldn't keep the momentum going.

Tijuana's problem had to do with their lack of fitness, rather than with talent. The home team took advantage of this and put pressure on Xolos.

The effort paid off and Guadalajara tied the game in stoppage time.

Winner: Omar Bravo

9 of 9

After 13 matchdays of bad performances and zero goals, Omar Bravo finally patched things up with Guadalajara and the club's fans.

The veteran striker put the ball away twice in the game against Tijuana, helping his team secure one point on home soil.

The last time the former Mexico international scored a brace in the Liga MX was last February, during the 2014 Clausura, when Chivas defeated Queretaro 2-1.
