Indianapolis Colts cornerback Vontae Davis exited Sunday's Week 8 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers at Heinz Field with a knee injury.
ESPN.com's Mike Wells reported on the difficult news for the Colts' defensive backfield:
Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com noticed how Davis' absence impacted Indianapolis' secondary:
Davis and fellow starting corner Greg Toler share a strong bond, which has been a significant reason behind the Colts' success in 2014 amid a current five-game winning streak. The tandem has been a driving force behind a pass defense that was ranked fourth in the league entering Sunday's contest.
Before Week 8, Toler discussed how he, Davis and the other defensive backs have been on the same page, per Wells:
"When [Davis] makes a big hit, I'm itching to catch myself someone out there but not trying to hurt no one. We push each other and that's just great in the game itself being the serious competitors that we are. It's good to know that off the field you're going to hear about it later if someone catches one on me. Anything, you're going to hear about later. We're texting all the time. We're always in group chat and that's just with all the secondary. I think that’s why we're playing at the level we are right now.
"
Defending the pass well is as important as ever given how modern NFL rules tend to give the benefit of the doubt and competitive advantage to the offense. That makes losing Davis all the more critical and devastating if his injury is severe.
No one on the Colts' roster can emulate Davis' individual impact, so it will take a collective effort to compensate for his loss. Having a strong pass rush would help immensely, but if opposing quarterbacks can just attack whoever lines up in Davis' stead with quick passes, that can wear down Indy's defensive front.
For a team that entered Week 8 with so much momentum, Davis' injury outlook will go a long way in determining how hopeful Colts fans can be about their defense for the rest of 2014.
