The Baltimore Ravens could have to compete without a key contributor on defense after Jimmy Smith went down with a foot injury.
Early in the team's Week 8 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, the fourth-year cornerback was carted off the field, as noted by the Ravens' official Twitter account:
The Ravens later updated Smith's status and likelihood of returning:
Aaron Wilson of The Baltimore Sun provided an update on what's next for Smith:
Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports pointed out the player's value on the defense:
After being taken in the first round of the 2011 draft, Smith has blossomed into a quality cornerback at this level. The 26-year-old has started every game since the beginning of the 2013 season and has regularly used his size to match up against the bigger receivers around the league.

Smith came into the game leading the team with eight passes defend on the year to go with one interception.
Baltimore can feel confident with fellow cornerback Lardarius Webb taking on a bigger role, but the inconsistent Chykie Brown will be more of an adventure in the defensive secondary. Dominique Franks will also see more playing time while Smith is out.
