Chelsea vs. Maribor: Lessons Learned from Champions League Game
Chelsea crushed Maribor, 6-0, at Stamford Bridge to earn its second win in the UEFA Champions League this season.
The Blues now have seven points after winning a match in which four different players found the back of the net.
Eden Hazard was the star of the night with a second-half brace, while Loic Remy, Didier Drogba and John Terry also scored. The other strike was an own goal conceded by Mitja Viler.
Here's a look at the biggest lessons we learned from the Blues' big win.
Chelsea Face a Real Problem at the Forward Position
1 of 5
Chelsea's celebrations turned into concern right after Loic Remy pulled up lame following his 13th-minute goal.
Remy, who was in the starting XI because of Diego Costa's injury, had a bright start to the match. Once he found the back of the net, however, concern over his health arose.
The French forward was taken off three minutes later in favor of Didier Drogba, who is now one of two healthy forwards along with Dominic Solanke.
With a big clash against Manchester United ahead in league play Sunday, manager Jose Mourinho could face a selection dilemma at the position.
Mourinho confirmed to reporters after the match that Remy suffered a muscular injury, and he does not expect the Frenchman or Costa to be fit for Sunday.
"It's a muscular injury. I don't know the dimension, and I am not worried," Mourinho said. "When a player is injured, play another one. No problem. No, I don't expect him to be fit to face United. Normally a muscular problem is a couple of weeks."
Chelsea's Defenders Showed How Dangerous They Can Be in Attack

Defenders played a key role in three of Chelsea's goals scored in front of the home fans at Stamford Bridge.
John Terry impressed everyone with his 80-yard run on a counter to tap in the Blues' third goal of the match in the 31st minute.
In the 54th minute, Filipe Luis made a terrific run down the left flank to play a cross to Eden Hazard, whose shot deflected off Mitja Viler for an own goal.
Branislav Ivanovic then got in on the action late in the second half, as he earned a penalty on the right side of the box.
With so many attacking options out of the back four, Chelsea could wreak havoc on Manchester United's shaky defense Sunday.
Eden Hazard Had 1 of His Best Matches of the Season
3 of 5
Eden Hazard was superb throughout the full 90 minutes for Chelsea, as he posed a constant threat to the Maribor defense.
The Belgian finally found the back of the net in the 77th minute on a penalty kick, and then he ended the scoring when he finished off a Nathan Ake pass in the 90th minute.
On his second goal, Hazard cut through the Maribor defense to cap off a perfect day at Stamford Bridge.
He also played a major role in the fourth strike by the Blues, as his shot deflected off Mitja Viler and into the right side of the net.
If Hazard continues to play like this, the Chelsea attack may be unstoppable—especially when Cesc Fabregas gets involved.
Jose Mourinho Was Able to Rest His Stars and Give the Youth Some Experience
4 of 5
Thanks to three first-half goals, Jose Mourinho was able to grant some of his key players a breather leading up to Sunday's match against Manchester United.
Cesc Fabregas exited the match in the 60th minute for Nathan Ake, while Oscar was removed 13 minutes later in favor of Dominic Solanke, who made his Chelsea debut.
Not only was Mourinho able to rest two of his most important players, but he also was able to hand valuable minutes to Ake, Solanke and Kurt Zouma, who started at centre-back.
You never know when these players will be forced into unfamiliar roles throughout the season, which is why earning time under the bright lights of Europe was crucial.
Maribor's Fighting Spirit Will Help It in Final 3 Group Matches
5 of 5
Maribor was thoroughly outclassed in London on Tuesday night, but despite being on the losing side of the scoreline for most of the match, it still made an effort to go forward.
The Slovenian side did earn a penalty in the 64th minute, when Nemanja Matic committed a careless foul in the box. Unfortunately for the visitors, Agim Ibraimi hit the post with his shot from the spot.
With three matches remaining, Maribor are just three points behind Schalke for second place.
As we saw in Schalke's 4-3 win over Sporting Lisbon on Tuesday, the two other sides in Group G are susceptible to conceding.
With that in mind, Maribor should be confident heading into its final three matches in regard to its qualification status.
