The Seattle Seahawks provide an update on Doug Baldwin's status:
Original Text:
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin was emerging as Russell Wilson's favorite target. Now, the third-year quarterback may have to find a new safety net because Baldwin may miss Week 10 against the New York Giants with a groin injury.
Tim Booth of The Associated Press provided the news:
Baldwin essentially took over the role vacated by Golden Tate, who led the team in catches last year before signing with Detroit as a free agent.
The fourth-year receiver isn't a dynamic playmaker on the outside, but he's developed Wilson's trust. Coming into Week 10, he's amassed 34 catches for 409 yards and one touchdown.
Of course, Baldwin and Wilson did have one notable incident this season. During the Seahawks' Week 5 loss at home against Dallas, the receiver was seen on the sidelines yelling at the quarterback. He also went off on a postgame rant to reporters, saying the team was buying into the media hype around it:
"We have to quit BS-ing ourselves. We’ve got to be real with ourselves. When we get in the meeting room, we’ve got to actually pay attention to things and not blow smoke up our tails that everything’s going to be all right. Things aren’t going right. Pay attention to things that we’re not doing right and correct them.
"
Losing Baldwin may not be as significant as most teams losing their top receiver because Wilson does such a great job of spreading the ball around.
It's still notable, though, because he's been the safety net Wilson looks for when the Seahawks need to get a first down. Without Percy Harvin, depth at wide receiver was already an issue before Baldwin's groin issue.
The good news is that the Seahawks aren't a pass-heavy team. They are at their best when running back Marshawn Lynch is setting the tone on offense and Wilson is making plays out of the pocket with his arm and occasionally his legs.
Though Baldwin makes catches in the slot and moves the chains, Seattle has built enough depth to withstand his loss for at least a period of time.
