Cardinals' Yadier Molina Breaks All-Time Franchise Record for Hits

Bleacher Report MilestonesOct 13, 2014

St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina recorded his 89th career postseason hit during Sunday's Game 2 of the NLCS against the San Francisco Giants to pass Albert Pujols for the all-time franchise playoff hits record, according to the Cardinals' official Twitter account.

Though he broke a record in his team's series-evening 5-4 victory, Molina didn't have the best of evenings, as he was forced out of the game by an oblique injury in the seventh inning. Following the contest, the former NL MVP said that the pain from the oblique strain is the worst he's ever felt, but added that he still hopes to play again this postseason, per MLB.com's Jenifer Langosch.

Molina finished his night with a single, a sacrifice bunt and a ground-ball double play, bringing his triple slash line to an unsightly .238/.238/.286 through 21 at-bats this postseason.

For his career, Molina owns a .290/.344/.375 line in 86 playoff games, while Pujols has a .323/.431/.599 line in 77 games, with 74 of those appearances coming in a Cardinals uniform.

Making his first playoff appearance with the Los Angeles Angels this season, Pujols managed just two hits in 12 at-bats, albeit with a home run, during a three-game sweep at the hands of the Kansas City Royals.

The 32-year-old Molina, meanwhile, may not make it back by the end of the playoffs but should still have a chance to reach 100 career playoff hits before he retires.
