San Francisco Giants Beat St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 in Game 1 of NLCS
The San Francisco Giants moved to 4-0 on the road this postseason with a 3-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1 of the NLCS.
San Francisco got the scoring started in the second inning when Pablo Sandoval led off with a double. After loading the bases, Cardinals’ starting pitcher Adam Wainwright gave up a bloop single to Travis Ishikawa, scoring Sandoval. They got their second run of the inning after third baseman Matt Carpenter booted a groundball with two outs, allowing Pence to score.
The Giants got their final run of the contest the following inning on a sac-fly by Belt. That was all Giants’ starting pitcher Madison Bumgarner would need.

Madison Bumgarner's road scoreless innings streak in the postseason -- now at 25 -- is a record.
— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) October 12, 2014 https://twitter.com/Buster_ESPN/status/521124078527074304">25 consecutive scoreless innings on the road in the postseason. He finished the night going 7.2 innings, giving up just four hits and one walk while striking out seven. The Cardinals simply did not have an answer for the southpaw.
Only three Cardinals managed a hit off Bumgarner with John Jay accounting for half the team’s total.
The only real threat he faced came in the bottom of the seventh when the Cardinals had runners on second and third with two outs. Tony Cruz pinch-hit in the pitcher’s spot but Bumgarner struck him out to end the inning.
On the other side, it was another shaky performance for the Wainwright. He threw 98 pitches in just 4.2 innings on the mound and gave up three runs, two of which were earned. He was not in the same form that earned him 20 wins during the regular season.
The right-hander only managed 58 strikes and stayed away from his fastball. Ken Rosenthal tweeted out that of Wainwright’s 98 pitches, only 24 were fastballs.
San Francisco’s starting pitchers are now 5-1 this postseason and have allowed just four runs.
Game 2 will take place tomorrow with Jake Peavy on the mound for the Giants and Lance Lynn going for the Cardinals. San Francisco will look to make it eight-straight wins on the road in the playoffs, having claimed their seventh tonight.
