Canelo Alvarez Injury: Updates on Boxing Star's Ankle and Return

Sean ODonnellOct 6, 2014

Updates from Tuesday, Oct. 7

Boxing Scene's Salvador Rodriguez provides an update on Conelo Alvarez's injury and future from manager Edison Reynoso:

"

The boxer, and his team, are now focused on landing a big fight on Cinco De Mayo weekend (May 2) and WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs) is likely their top target.

"Unfortunately this injury happened and we didn't want Saul to take the risk [of fighting with this injury]. This does not change our plans, which is going for that big fight in May 2015. Obviously everyone knows about Cotto, but we are a big name," said Reynoso.

"We simply want a big fight. This is what the team and Canelo is looking for. We want to find something good for this May, 2015.

Just days after reaching an exclusive long-term agreement with HBO, top Mexican light-middleweight fighter Canelo Alvarez delayed his return to prime-time boxing due to a lingering ankle injury, according to Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports.

Alvarez allegedly injured his ankle during a workout, and Golden Boy president Oscar De La Hoya elaborated on the injury, via Iole's report:

"

It bothers him so much when he runs, or when he's up on his toes and hitting the bag. I think it's like a muscle strain in his ankle, is what you might call it. It's nothing serious, but the pain is serious enough now that he didn't want to go through with a training camp and then this fight. He wanted to get it fixed.

"

The training camp in question was a preparation for Alvarez's next scheduled fight against Joshua Clottey on December 6. Clottey holds a career record of 38-4-0 with 22 knockouts, and the impending bout was garnering plenty of interest from fans of the sport.

Currently, Alvarez holds a career record of 44-1-1 with 31 knockouts, his lone loss coming in a fight against pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather. Canelo has a vastly growing following, and his return to the ring remains highly anticipated.
