Alex Henery Released by Lions: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Chris RolingOct 6, 2014

After missing a number of field goals, including a potential game-winning kick against the Buffalo Bills in Week 5, the Detroit Lions have parted ways with kicker Alex Henery mere weeks after bringing him on board.

Henery, 27, is merely the latest Detroit kicker to lose his job over performance issues. He was brought on two weeks ago in place of Nate Freese, who missed a critical field goal against Green Bay in Week 3.

The Nebraska product split a pair of attempts in a win against the New York Jets the following week but missed all three of his attempts in a three-point loss to Buffalo on Sunday.

Lions coach Jim Caldwell refused to endorse his kicker immediately after the game.

"This is the big leagues, plain and simple," Caldwell said, per Kyle Meinke of MLive.com. "If I don't do my job right, the same thing will happen. All of us are called into question in that regard. We've got to perform."

ESPN's Adam Schefter notes a potential candidate who could be set to replace Henery in Detroit:

Jay Feely also took a moment to chime in on the matter himself:

Caldwell also spoke about the team's plans at the position, via Meinke:

"

Caldwell said the process has already begun to find Henery's replacement. He'll value experience in the process, but won't rule out any options.

The Lions are expected to hold tryouts this week in Allen Park.

"It's one of those things we'll look at closely," Caldwell said. 'We have to find a performer. That's basically what we have to get done in that area. We got to get a guy who is consistent under pressure and be able to get us points on the board. In this league, there are going to be close games and guys at that position are going to decide a number of games.

"(Experience is) one of the factors you have to look at because they've done it before, and suspect they're accustomed to it. But we've got to look at all phases."

"

As Bleacher Report's Cian Fahey points out, it has been a tumultuous season for Henery to date, as he recently lost his job in Philadelphia as well due to accuracy issues:

For Detroit, the hunt for a replacement begins in earnest. According to Meinke, the team will "value experience in the process but won't rule out any options." Feely certainly does have experience, so he makes sense in that regard.

As for Henery, job opportunities may prove slim in the short term although injuries and a lack of proven experience on the market may see him land in a competition at some point down the line.
