Full Kansas City Chiefs Awards at the Quarter Mark of the 2014 NFL Season
The Kansas City Chiefs' 2-2 start to the season has featured a lot of positives and negatives. With many starters missing, as high as nine at one point, and after a rough start against the Titans, fans wondered if this team could rebound.
The Chiefs have done just that in the past two weeks and have proven themselves as they move forward.
With the first quarter of the season in the books, we will look back and hand out a few awards.
MVP: QB Alex Smith
1 of 6
Alex Smith did not look like a starting quarterback in Week 1 after a rough outing. He opened up the season throwing three interceptions against the Titans. Since then, he has not thrown one.
Smith since then has led the Chiefs and put them in position to win.
In each of the past two games, Smith has thrown three touchdown passes and no interceptions.
Offensive Player: RB Knile Davis
2 of 6
Jamaal Charles suffered an injury early in the first quarter in Week 2, forcing him to miss Week 3 against Miami. Losing Charles is always a downfall, but Knile Davis stepped up in Charles' place.
Davis has rushed for 321 yards, the fourth most in the NFL.
With Charles back, the two now form one of the strongest running back duos in the league.
Defensive Player: OLB Justin Houston
3 of 6
You could put either Justin Houston or Tamba Hali in this slide. It really is a toss up.
Houston ties first in the league in sacks with one other defensive player and has two multi-sack games.
As part of a team with multiple dangerous pass-rushers, Houston is on pace to get double-digit sacks for the third straight year.
Most Improved: LT Eric Fisher
4 of 6
Eric Fisher is making the switch to left tackle after spending his rookie season on the right side prior to Branden Albert's departure. Throughout the preseason, it didn't appear Fisher had improved. But during Kansas City's recent surge, Fisher has grown into a more complete tackle.
Fisher gave up 8.5 sacks and committed six penalties as a rookie coming out of Central Michigan. This year, Fisher has not been penalized and has given up just one sack, playing well against some of the league's better pass-rushers.
Rookie: OLB Dee Ford
5 of 6
We have seen just a little bit of Dee Ford, mainly because the Chiefs want to use Hali and Houston mostly. But Andy Reid has used Ford at times.
In what we have seen from Ford so far, he's come in and applied pressure, forcing quarterbacks to get rid of the ball sooner.
The future is undecided as to what the Chiefs will do with Hali and Houston, but it is expected that Ford will replace one of them. For now, the Chiefs are set and the pass rush will always be there.
Comeback Player: TE Travis Kelce
6 of 6
Travis Kelce was available for Week 1 of the 2013 season, but he did not play. Kelce went on to miss the rest of his rookie campaign due to a knee injury. To date, Kelce has 18 catches for 259 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
He earned his first career start and touchdown in Week 3 against the Dolphins. In Week 4, Kelce shined on the national stage during Monday Night Football.
Showing off his ability to catch, run and make defenders miss, Kelce caught eight passes for 93 yards and a touchdown. As one of Smith's top targets, the Chiefs' passing game will be a threat, making it hard for opposing defenses to stop.
