DeMarco Murray's Instant Fantasy Reaction After Week 4

Nate LoopSep 28, 2014

As of the Dallas Cowboys' Week 4 demolition of the New Orleans Saints, running back DeMarco Murray is the most fearsome fantasy football running back in the league.

This was the mantle reserved for the likes of LeSean McCoy or possibly Jamaal Charles. Instead, it's the fourth-year back out of Oklahoma playing in silver and blue.

Randall Liu, the NFL's Director of NFC Football Communications, brought up this synergistic statistic when Murray passed the century mark on the ground midway through the third quarter:

Cowboys fans will be especially happy to see Murray's name in the same breath as the legendary Emmitt Smith.

Murray racked up touchdown runs of 15 and 28 yards through the first three quarters, looking genuinely unstoppable in the process.

Bleacher Report's own Matt Miller believes he could hit a rare running back milestone if things break his way:

It's a fine start to the season, but it may very well be an unsustainable rate of production after considering this tidbit from Rotoworld's Evan Silva:

That's a huge number of carries and could put Murray at risk for an injury. However, that's outside of fantasy football owners' control.

Averaging 5.1 yards per carry coming into this contest, Murray's fatal flaw is his propensity to fumble the football. He's already coughed up the ball twice this season, but he managed to hold onto the rock in the early goings of the Saints game.

Any which way you slice it, Murray is a starting RB1 until he starts gift-wrapping the ball before his fumbles. Dallas has the flimsy, mercurial Tony Romo at quarterback, so it essentially cannot afford to bench Murray unless it's to send a message.

Even then, the production has been almost too good to ignore. Look for Murray to torch fantasy leagues across the nation and set off a cascade of calls for a season-long mulligan from those who drafted the preseason elite running backs.
