LeSean McCoy's Week 3 Performance Nothing to Worry About for Fantasy Owners

Steven CookSep 22, 2014

Needless to say, Week 3 wasn't a shining moment for LeSean McCoy fantasy owners. But expecting anything other than a big-time rebound from the Philadelphia Eagles star is a mistake.

For the first time all season, McCoy was held in check on Sunday against the Washington Redskins. With Philly airing it out in a game that evolved into a shootout, the 26-year-old failed to make a contribution.

It wasn't without opportunities. He had 19 carries on the game, but only turned them into 22 yards for an ugly average of 1.2 yards per attempt.

McCoy's longest run of the game went for nine yards, which is closer to his average per carry in your typical game. Other than that, he was bottled up by the Redskins' front seven.

One non-impact performance didn't do anything to hamper McCoy's fantasy stock, but a blow to the head nearly did. However, CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora noticed he didn't seem fazed by it:

Watching McCoy repeatedly get stuffed at the line was undoubtedly concerning for his fantasy owners—most of whom drafted the back with a top-three overall pick. But don't get used to it.

For starters, the Eagles faced a Washington defense that struggles mightily through the air but has held its own in the run game. Through three games, the Redskins have held opponents to just 194 rushing yards—third-best in the league.

But regardless of the opposition, it's hard to envision another dud performance against any defensive unit given McCoy's reputation for consistency.

McCoy rushed for over 100 yards seven times last season, and they were spread out—his longest span without a 100-yard game in 2013 was three games.

On top of that, there's just no back in the league who runs quite like McCoy, as SportsCenter illustrated:

Sunday may have been McCoy's worst performance on the ground since midway through 2012, but he's proven over the course of time to be dependable week in and week out. His value in the offense is immense, and that will go a long way in such a strong attack.

Nick Foles has shown no signs of slowing down after his breakout 2013 campaign, and continued success in the passing game will open things up for McCoy. This offense lives and dies off its run game regardless of Foles' passing success, and Chip Kelly will not stray from his commitment to McCoy and the run game.

The Eagles' banged-up offensive line poses questions, but the quickness and presence that McCoy brings to the backfield can negate any of those deficiencies.

A tough Week 4 matchup with San Francisco looms, but McCoy won't be scared off by the challenge.
