Usos vs. Goldust and Stardust: Winner and Post-Match Reaction
The Usos' impressive reign with the WWE Tag Team Championship finally came to an end Sunday as the team of Goldust and Stardust prevailed at Night of Champions.
The WWE Twitter account had the news:
WrestlingInc.com provided its quick take on the match:
Adam Rose offered up his congrats to the new champions:
"Congrats to @Goldust and @StardustWWE! I like weird! #WWENOC
— Adam Rose (@WWEAdamRose) September 22, 2014"
Jimmy and Jey Uso had held the titles for more than 200 days after initially winning them back in March. Goldust and Stardust posed a major threat, though, and became champions together for the second time after previously winning the straps as Goldust and Cody Rhodes.
The rivalry between these two sibling teams seemingly started off in a friendly manner, but things quickly went sour. Goldust and Stardust accused The Usos of getting themselves intentionally counted out in a match, which resulted in the bizarre duo snapping and turning heel.
Goldust and Stardust worked over Jey's injured knee and even hit it repeatedly with a steel chair.
Based on his comments after the attack, Stardust was not at all remorseful:
The Usos showed a great amount of fight during their long and entertaining feud with Luke Harper and Erick Rowan of the Wyatt Family, so it came as little surprise when they sought out revenge against Goldust and Stardust as well.
Goldust wasn't a fan of their tactics, but The Usos made their intentions clear:
As Night of Champions continued to draw closer, Goldust and Stardust became even more aggressive. The Bizarre One and his equally strange brother were most definitely thorns in The Usos' sides. Goldust believed that their strategy would lead to championship glory:
That ultimately came to fruition, and there is no question that all four men delivered from an in-ring perspective. WWE's tag team division certainly isn't the best it has ever been and doesn't feature a ton of depth, but The Usos continue to put on solid matches with everyone they go up against.
Goldust and Stardust are two of the better workers in WWE today, and they have the same brotherly connection that has helped The Usos become so successful in the tag team ranks.
Now that Goldust and Stardust have ripped the titles away from The Usos, it is entirely possible that this feud could continue. WWE has committed to lengthy tag team angles in recent months, and it isn't as if there are many other options to put up against Goldust and Stardust.
The Usos are entitled to a rematch, so it shouldn't be difficult for the creative team to extend this rivalry to next month's Hell in a Cell pay-per-view at the very least.
There aren't many viable contenders available to Goldust and Stardust right now, although the duo of Big Show and Mark Henry could step up if they reunite after Night of Champions. They are two potential future Hall of Famers with a lot of credibility. Once Goldust and Stardust finish with The Usos, Big Show and Mark Henry would certainly make sense.
Another possibility is the elevation of The Ascension from NXT to the main roster. Konnor and Viktor ran roughshod over NXT as the longest-reigning NXT tag team champions of all time, but they dropped the titles at NXT Takeover: Fatal 4-Way to Kalisto and Sin Cara.
They are probably better off as heels, but they have received favorable crowd reactions in NXT, so it isn't outside the realm of possibility that they could set their sights on Goldust, Stardust and the titles.
The Usos did some good things as champions, but it was time to shake things up in the tag team ranks. Goldust and Stardust are as unpredictable as they come, so it will be interesting to see how they fare as the anchor of the tag division.
