WWE Battleground 2014 Results: Analyzing Biggest Winners and Best Performances

Brian MaziqueJul 20, 2014

On a whole, WWE Battleground was a decent show. It had its high and low points, but it was another solid benefit for those who have subscribed to the WWE Network. Had you paid $60 on pay-per-view, the value might not have been there.

That said, let's give out some awards and distinctions.

John Cena retained the WWE world heavyweight title, but then again, we all knew he would. However, the Fatal 4-Way between Cena, Kane, Randy Orton and Roman Reigns wasn't the story at WWE Battlegrounds on Sunday night.

Without question, the match of the night was the tag team title clash between The Usos and The Wyatt Family. It was a thrilling 2-out-of-3 Falls match, and every second of it was awesome.

The moment you think you're tired of this feud, they put on a match like the one that took place on Sunday night in Tampa, Florida. It was ridiculous...in a good way.

David Cohen of Ringside Gaming and WWE Creative Humor didn't mind the repetition:

There were as many thrills in this match as any classic main event from one of the Big Four pay-per-views. It was that good.

Who else shined?

Best Performance in a Nonviolent Role: Wade Barrett

Every time you see an injured Bad News Barrett on the mic, it sucks even more that he's on the shelf with a legit injury. Just before the Battle Royal to decide the winner of his intercontinental title, the big man from England had to deliver some bad news.

The premise of his message was captured in the following tweet:

Barrett cut a nice, live promo on the ramp to the ring that showed why he has such a huge ceiling as a WWE Superstar. Get well soon, BNB.

Best Performance in an Ensemble Cast: Dolph Ziggler

Dolph Ziggler didn't win the Battle Royal, but the Showoff put on a sick display of athleticism, exemplary move selling and overall drama. You know, what he always does and gets no respect for.

The Miz won the match by catching the unsuspecting Ziggler off guard for the final elimination. Ziggler had just disposed of Sheamus and it appeared he had won the match, but The Miz had been escorted from the ring under the bottom rope, so he hadn't been eliminated.

Afterward, The Miz celebrated on the second turnbuckle.

Even though he didn't win, it seems Ziggler is on his way back up the ranks. A nice program could be in place for him and The Miz leading into SummerSlam. We've seen those two clash before, but with The Miz's new and entertaining Hollywood angle, the redux could be quite nice.

Best Non-Match: Seth Rollins vs. Dean Ambrose

The match was scheduled to happen, but instead we got an all-out brawl between the two former members of The Shield that lasted the entire show.

Dean Ambrose attacked Seth Rollins during an interview before the match. The Authority was none too happy with Ambrose's actions, and Triple H tweeted this during the show:

You knew he was coming back, right?

As Rollins attempted to accept his win via forfeit in the ring, doggone it, someone let Ambrose back in the building. The two brawled into the crowd, and their anger couldn't be contained by the elderly members of WWE security.

It was pretty cool.

You didn't think that was it, did you?

As Rollins was being escorted to his car by two more elderly members of WWE security, his manly pride caused him to send his protection away. That was Ambrose's cue to hop out of the trunk of a car like Ken Jeong in The Hangover.

The only difference was Ambrose had on pants.

Well, there were a few other differences, but you get the point of the reference. Rollins and Ambrose began to go at it again like wild animals until Mr. Money in the Bank escaped in the car Ambrose had emerged from.

Was it cool to trade the Rollins-Ambrose match for a show-long street fight? You bet it was. It furthered the story and made you care about this feud even more than you already did. YouTube wrestling commentator Dalyxman agreed:

The WWE's job is to make fans care about every feud, not just the ones involving titles. So far so good on this one.
