Most Memorable Fights Of The New Millenia

Boxing Whisperer ....Jun 17, 2009

First, on my list has to go to Corrales vs. Castillo.  Who can forget this fight? A back and forth slug fest, both fighters on the verge of getting knocked out but at the very last second countering with a flurry of punches.  The very definition of blood, sweat and tears. Also lets not forget about the timing. Not necessarily by the fighters but by the actual fight itself. It came at a time when boxing was catching a lot of flak by MMA fans. And did it ever come through for us. Boxing can no longer be question.

Second, Freitas vs. Barrios. Remember that one? This one reminds us of how great boxing can be. Rivaled only by Max Schmeling vs. Joe Louis where two fighters brought two countries to the edge of their feet. One could smell the rivalry in the air (yes, through the t.v.). And with their countries on their backs they fought till they had no fight left in them. It reminds us of how patriotic the sport really is. There were no losers that night!

Third, De La Hoya vs. Trinidad. Wow, the anticipation! DLH representing U.S. and Mexico. Trinidad representing Puerto Rico. A  showdown that would prove not only who is the better fighter ( no, this was bigger than that) but, which country produces the better champions, you see? Who has the most fans? The best fans, the most heart. And so three countries awaited.

Fourth, Pac Man vs. Morales 2. So boxing was considered a niche sport. Not anymore (index finger moves side to side). Was Barerra a fluke? Did Barerra have an off night? Well, when Morales shook his head in the second round because he couldn't take what that young Filipino had to give, a new face to boxing had emerged. And with him came the most loyal fan base to ever enter the boxing arena. The entire country of the Philippine's.  Thank you Pac Man!

Fifth, Barerra vs. Nassim Hamed. The man that everyone loved to hate (really hate). The man that everyone paid for ppv's time after time in hopes of seeing him get knocked out. (no, I'm not talking about Mayweather jr : )  ) And the satisfaction that came with his defeat. Words cannot give the feeling justice.
