Where Should Nick Montana End Up?
When your father is one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game, if you have any sort of discernible talent, you are going to be in the spotlight.
Nick Montana is no exception.
Entering his senior season, Montana is getting recruited by some of the biggest names in college football, and speculation on where he will end up is beginning to reach a fevered pitch.
Word on the street is that Montana has narrowed it down to seven schools: Ohio State, LSU, Notre Dame, Georgia, Alabama, Stanford, and Washington.
If you're like me, you started humming, "One of these things is not like the other" when you saw Washington on the list. Does a team that finished 0-12 last season stand a chance with these other schools? I'm going to say no, cut the list to six, and move on.
That was easy.
Then there's Stanford. It is the closest to home out of all the schools.
However, with a last name like Montana, you know that Nick has been living in his father's tremendous shadow for his entire life. He needs to set himself apart from his dad, become his own person. For that kind of decision, he needs to move far away from home.
Scratch Stanford.
How about Notre Dame? Although Charlie Weis is widely considered a quarterback's coach, Brady Quinn slipped heavily in the draft, and Jimmy Clausen has had two years of very mixed results. If Notre Dame has a turnaround season this year, it's a possibility, but Montana could commit before that happens.
Also, if Montana does want to get out of his dad's shadow, then attending his alma mater may not be the best way to go.
Notre Dame is out.
Alabama seems like a strong possibility. They were right in the title hunt this past year, and who could pass up the opportunity to play for Nick Saban for the next four years?
Oh, wait, nobody knows where Nick Saban will be four years from now. It all depends on if a better coaching opportunity comes along.
Sorry Bama.
That leaves Ohio State, Georgia, and LSU—all high-profile, football-crazy BCS schools.
Georgia produced top pick Matthew Stafford. LSU always seems to be in the hunt for the national title.
But I think Ohio State will be the best fit. They have gotten to a BCS game for the past three years (two of them championship games) but have continually come up short. Montana could potentially put them over the top if he lives up to his potential.
What do you think folks? Would Montana be a good fit for the Ohio State University?
