Projecting Full-Season Stats for Each New York Knicks Player

Josh CohenOct 31, 2013

The New York Knicks have settled on their 15-man roster, but their rotation remains in perpetual flux.

Due to injury and general uncertainty, chances are slim that the Knicks' opening night rotation will stay consistent throughout the season. There are too many brittle players that could go down and lineup permutations that could get hot and cold at any moment.

But that's pretty much the usual for New York, right in keeping with this team's unique blend of high-scoring, mediocre-defending wackiness.

In the 2012-13 season, the Knicks averaged 100.0 points, 40.6 rebounds, 19.3 assists, 8.2 steals, 3.6 blocks, 12.0 turnovers and 10.9 made three-pointers per game. They shot 44.8 percent from the field, 37.6 percent from beyond the arc and 75.9 percent on free throws.

New York made some gains in the offensive frontcourt this summer, so expect them to improve in that regard. I'm projecting 101.2 points, 42.9 rebounds, 17.8 assists, 8.6 steals, 4.3 blocks, 14.1 turnovers and 10.3 made threes per game while shooting 45.4 percent from the field, 38.1 percent from three and 75.5 percent from the stripe.

Cole Aldrich

1 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats (with Houston and Sacramento): 45 games, 8.6 MIN, 2.2 PTS, 2.7 REB, 0.2 AST, 0.1 STL, 0.5 BLK, 0.5 TO, 0.0 3PM, 55.0 FG%, 0.0 3FG%, 60.0 FT%

Cole Aldrich joined the Knicks to be a large body who can play with some energy and waste some fouls if need be.

It's an unglamorous role, but it's one Aldrich has accepted in order to maintain his place in the league. He's active inside, willing to get physical and take advantage of whatever opportunities he gets.

As the last big on the bench, they will be few and far between and come weeks apart, but he's not here to fill stat sheets anyway.

Projected 2013-14 stats: 32 games, 6.1 MIN, 1.8 PTS, 2.4 REB, 0.1 AST, 0.1 STL, 0.4 BLK, 0.4 TO, 0.0 3PM, 53.6 FG%, 0.0 3FG%, 68.2 FT%

Carmelo Anthony

2 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats: 67 games, 37.0 MIN, 28.7 PTS, 6.9 RBS, 2.6 AST, 0.8 STL, 0.5 BLK, 2.6 TO, 2.3 3PM, 44.9 FG%, 37.9 3FG%, 83.0 FT%

The Knicks offense is constructed around Carmelo Anthony in the same spread-out fashion it was last season, so don't expect his production to deviate too much.

Melo will get more help in shot creation from his supporting cast, so his output should drop a bit, but his efficiency will improve with more facilitated looks. He'll get more playing time at his natural small forward position again, but he'll keep playing from the elbow and spotting up as he did before.

Matching his career high in points will be a stretch, but the dip in scoring will be negligible and made up elsewhere.

2013-14 stats: 71 games, 36.8 MIN, 27.6 PTS, 7.1 RBS, 3.3 AST, 0.8 STL, 0.6 BLK, 2.3 TO, 2.5 3PM, 45.8 FG%, 38.2 3FG%, 81.9 FT%

Andrea Bargnani

3 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats (with Toronto): 35 games, 28.7 MIN, 12.7 PTS, 3.7 REB, 1.1 AST, 0.6 STL, 0.7 BLK, 1.5 TO, 1.1 3PM, 39.9 FG%, 30.9 3FG%, 84.4 FT%

Yeesh. Andrea Bargnani was a bad fit with the Toronto Raptors, so he'll likely improve just by regressing toward the mean. Even so, those numbers do not inspire confidence.

Bargs has poor hands, is enamored with long twos and has no instincts for help defense or positioning. That said, he's still athletic for a seven-footer and sports a sneakily diverse offensive game. He'll get playing time in spurts.

Moving from a hands-on role in Toronto to off-ball work in New York is a tough transition for Bargnani, but he'll eventually make himself useful as an auxiliary scoring option.

2013-14 stats: 68 games, 22.4 MIN, 11.8 PTS, 4.5 REB, 1.1 AST, 0.4 STL, 0.6 BLK, 1.1 TO, 1.4 3PM, 41.7 FG%, 34.9 3FG%, 83.6 FT%

Tyson Chandler

4 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats: 66 games, 32.8 MIN, 10.4 PTS, 10.7 REB, 0.9 AST, 0.6 STL, 1.1 BLK, 1.3 TO, 0.0 3PM, 63.8 FG%, 0.0 3FG%, 63.8 FT%

When healthy, Tyson Chandler is the full package as a defensive center, but his offensive game in New York has been one-dimensional: cut to the rim, finish strong. That's it.

So when Chandler tells George Willis of the New York Post that he's been working on his mid-range jumper, it's going to turn heads.

That added element to his game could allow Chandler to put some more points on the board, but it would also pull him away from the basket, limiting his opportunities for offensive boards and put-backs.

He'll probably knock down a couple when the defense is napping, but otherwise he'll be the same old hard-charging Chandler.

2013-14 stats: 69 games, 31.8 MIN, 10.7 PTS, 10.1 REB, 1.0 AST, 0.6 STL, 1.3 BLK, 1.3 TO, 0.0 3PM, 64.6 FG%, 0.0 3FG%, 66.2 FT%

Raymond Felton

5 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats: 13.9 PTS, 2.9 REB, 5.5 AST, 1.4 STL, 0.2 BLK, 2.3 TO, 1.4 3PM, 42.7 FG%, 36.0 3FG%, 78.9 FT%

Everyone's favorite butterball of a point guard reestablished himself as a starting-caliber player when he returned to New York, even while posting a career low in assists per game.

Expect that to be the new norm for Raymond Felton. Though he's the main operator in pick-and-roll situations, the Knicks offense is relies on him only to initiate the action, not necessarily to be the direct facilitator.

He'll keep slashing through the lane for buckets and finding open men on his own, but his main job is to get the ball moving. Whether that leads to recorded assists or hockey assists does not matter.

2013-14 per-game stats: 14.3 PTS, 3.0 REB, 5.8 AST, 1.5 STL, 0.2 BLK, 2.5 TO, 1.6 3PM, 43.0 FG%, 37.1 3FG%, 79.4 FT%

Tim Hardaway, Jr.

6 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats: N/A

Tim Hardaway, Jr. gives New York the traditional swingman it lacked last season.

He can create a little bit off the bounce, he can knock down some spot-up looks, he can play able D and most importantly, he can do all those things whether he's matched up against a shooting guard or a small forward.

It's tough to say whose minutes he'll end up taking, but he's too talented and too useful not to have a firm spot in the second unit.

2013-14 stats: 76 games, 18.1 MIN, 7.6 PTS, 2.1 REB, 2.7 AST, 0.5 STL, 0.3 BLK, 1.1 TO, 0.8 3PM, 42.6 FG%, 35.2 3FG%, 76.6 FT%

Kenyon Martin

7 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats: 18 games, 23.9 MIN, 7.2 PTS, 5.3 REB, 0.4 AST, 0.9 STL, 0.9 BLK, 0.9 TO, 0.0 3PM, 60.2 FG%, 0.0 3FG%, 42.5 FT%

At age 35, Kenyon Martin is a poor man's Tyson Chandler.

K-Mart is shorter, he's a less influential defender, his offensive game is less effective and his durability issues are more severe. He never would have been in the proper physical condition to spell Chandler late last season if he had started playing before the second half of the season.

He's still one of the toughest players in the NBA, but that toughness will be parceled out judiciously during the regular season.

2013-14 stats: 51 games, 21.2 MIN, 6.7 PTS, 5.2 REB, 0.3 AST, 0.7 STL, 0.8 BLK, 0.7 TO, 0.0 3PM, 58.9 FG%, 0.0 3FG%, 57.3 FT%

Toure' Murry

8 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats: N/A

Considering Toure' Murry's selflessness and positional versatility, he'll find his way onto the court at some point.

He's an inch shorter and 10 pounds lighter than Hardaway, but his distribution is the most important part of his offensive game. Murry doesn't have the skills necessary to run the point himself, but he could be a nice option when the Knicks want to trot out another ball-handler.

Even if there are injuries to guys in front of him, Murry will never be put in a situation where he has to rely on his decision-making. His impact will mainly be putting the ball in others' hands.

2013-14 stats: 24 games, 7.5 MIN, 1.6 PTS, 0.6 REB, 1.3 AST, 0.2 STL, 0.1 BLK, 0.3 TO, 0.1 3PM, 40.4 FG%, 32.1 3FG%, 67.6 FT%

Pablo Prigioni

9 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats: 78 games, 16.2 MIN, 3.5 PTS, 1.8 REB, 3.0 AST, 0.9 STL, 0.0 BLK, 1.1 TO, 0.7 3PM, 45.5 FG%, 39.6 3FG%, 88.0 FT%

Pablo Prigioni ingratiated himself to Knicks fans as a 35-year-old rookie with pest-like tendencies on both ends and a seeming phobia for making baskets.

He's a smart, willing passer and a savvy defender who can force turnovers on eagerness and dedication alone. When he's open beyond the arc or in transition, he'll take advantage, but he'll also drive all the way to the restricted area and bring the ball back out without even looking to shoot.

Prigs finally earned Mike Woodson's trust and got starter minutes late in 2012-13, and he should employ his unique skill set more often this season.

2013-14 stats: 75 games, 26.4 MIN, 7.4 PTS, 2.6 REB, 5.4 AST, 1.4 STL, 0.1 BLK, 1.9 TO, 1.5 3PM, 44.8 FG%, 39.1 3FG%, 86.8 FT%

Iman Shumpert

10 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats: 45 games, 22.1 MIN, 6.8 PTS, 3.0 REB, 1.7 AST, 1.0 STL, 0.2 BLK, 0.8 TO, 1.1 3PM, 39.6 FG%, 40.2 3FG%, 76.6 FT%

Iman Shumpert got his athleticism back after tearing his ACL, but a mix of physical and developmental limitations kept him from ever breaking out in his sophomore season.

Now Shump has a healthy offseason between him and his injury, and he spent that time working on his off-the-bounce attack to complement his solid spot-up shooting. He has added a eurostep and strengthened his mid-range game, increasing his utility on the offensive end.

The more defenses have to watch him as a scorer, the more he'll be able to facilitate and play more like the big point guard the Knicks think he can be. Given his lockdown, if at times overzealous, play on the other end, he's ready to take on a major role in New York.

2013-14 stats: 77 games, 32.7 MIN, 13.6 PTS, 4.9 REB, 3.3 AST, 1.7 STL, 0.3 BLK, 1.5 TO, 1.8 3PM, 42.5 FG%, 39.6 3FG%, 77.9 FT%

Chris Smith

11 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats: N/A

Chris Smith is decidedly the 15th man on this roster, a guy without a clear purpose at the NBA level.

He's 6'2", but he's not particularly good at shooting, creating, facilitating or defending. You could say he's a work in progress, but he's also 26, so it's not likely he'll be able to do much more than cling to a roster spot, sit on the end of the bench and collect his checks.

There is nothing he can do that Murry can't do better, and Murry will have to fight for minutes himself. Smith is here because he's J.R.'s little brother; he won't be here long before New York needs space for another usable player.

2013-14 stats: Six games, 1.2 MIN, 0.2 PTS, 0.0 REB, 0.1 AST, 0.1 STL, 0.0 BLK, 0.1 TO, 0.0 3PM, 33.3 FG%, 0.0 3FG%, 75.0 FT%

J.R. Smith

12 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats: 80 games, 33.5 MIN, 18.1 PTS, 5.3 REB, 2.7 AST, 1.3 STL, 0.3 BLK, 1.7 TO, 1.9 3PM, 42.2 FG%, 35.6 3FG%, 76.2 FT%

J.R. Smith is the reigning Sixth Man of the Year and will likely play from the second unit yet again, but his role will not be as vital this season.

That's no knock on Smith. Though he's erratic on the court and prone to bouts of awful decision-making, he's an explosive scorer who adds a creative element to the offense with his athleticism and insane shot-making ability.

However, Smith was such a huge part of the offense last season because no one beyond Melo and him could get his own shot. Through both acquisitions and internal improvements, the Knicks have addressed that shortage this summer, so J.R. won't see quite as large of a workload.

2013-14 per-game stats: 74 games, 31.9 MIN, 16.6 PTS, 4.7 REB, 2.5 AST, 1.2 STL, 0.3 BLK, 1.6 TO, 2.1 3PM, 42.8 FG%, 37.9 3FG%, 74.8 FT%

Amar'e Stoudemire

13 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats: 29 games, 23.5 MIN, 14.2 PTS, 5.0 REB, 0.4 AST, 0.3 STL, 0.7 BLK, 1.7 TO, 57.7 FG%, 0.0 3FG%, 80.8 FT%

Amar'e Stoudemire has become a battered shell of his former self, to the point that he'll be on a minutes limit for the remainder of the his basketball career.

STAT can still score, utilizing a mix of drives, elbow jumpers and an improving post game to harness what is left of his physical gifts. We don't like to talk about what he does on the other end.

He's not going to play for long stretches or on back-to-back nights, but he should be able to score in bunches when he does play.

2013-14 per-game stats: 43 games, 21.1 MIN, 12.7 PTS, 4.8 REB, 0.4 AST, 0.4 STL, 0.7 BLK, 1.6 TO, 55.2 FG%, 25.0 3FG%, 81.3 FT%

Beno Udrih

14 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats (with Milwaukee and Orlando): 66 games, 22.1 MIN, 8.2 PTS, 2.1 REB, 4.6 AST, 0.6 STL, 0.0 BLK, 1.6 TO, 0.5 3PM, 44.1 FG%, 33.3 3FG%, 81.6 FT%

Jason Kidd is coaching in the boroughs now, so Beno Udrih is taking over as the Knicks' third point guard.

Udrih does not have Kidd's basketball mind, but he is more than capable of making the right pass and will help New York whip the ball around the perimeter. His mobility is a big improvement for New York, allowing him to slash and stay in front of guards better than Kidd could at his advanced age.

With both Felton and Prigioni ahead of him on the depth chart, Udrih will wait for bangs and bruises to open up more playing time, but he'll still get some run to provide a scoring alternative to Prigs.

2013-14 per-game stats: 71 games, 19.1 MIN, 7.5 PTS, 1.9 REB, 4.2 AST, 0.5 STL, 0.1 BLK, 1.4 TO, 0.7 3PM, 43.3 FG%, 34.9 3FG%, 83.4 FT%

Metta World Peace

15 of 15

2012-13 per-game stats (with Lakers): 75 games, 33.7 MIN, 12.4 PTS, 5.0 REB, 1.5 AST, 1.6 STL, 0.6 BLK, 1.3 TO, 1.9 3PM, 40.3 FG%, 34.2 3FG%, 73.4 FT%

The pride of St. John's and Queensbridge is finally a Knick, and New York is lucky to have a guy with Metta World Peace's skill set.

He's the ideal type of forward to play alongside Anthony. Metta is fine running to the corners and taking open threes on offense, giving Melo more room to operate inside. On the other end, the muscular World Peace will be able to handle the more physical assignment, saving his superstar teammate for his scoring.

World Peace may serve as the defensive counterpart to Bargnani, but he has shown enough shooting ability to separate himself as a worthwhile rotation player.

2013-14 per-game stats: 72 games, 20.8 MIN, 9.6 PTS, 3.8 REB, 0.9 AST, 1.1 STL, 0.4 BLK, 0.8 TO, 1.1 3PM, 40.8 FG%, 35.3 3FG%, 72.3 FT%
