Seattle Mariners: 3 Post-Deadline Moves Team Could Still Make

Madison GuernseyAug 7, 2013

The Seattle Mariners and general manager Jack Zduriencik stood pat at the non-waiver trade deadline. The club had just come off a season-high eight-game winning streak and improved its playoff chances, though they were still bleak.

The winnng streak moved the Mariners into an interesting position. Once a definite seller, the improvement in play transitioned Seattle into more of a buyer, but not a typical buyer which has a playoff berth well within reach.

Being in no-man's land, Zduriencik decided to stick with his team and see how the season played out. Since the July 31 deadline, the Mariners are 2-4 and playing much like they have for the majority of the season.

The beauty of waivers allows teams to swap players after the non-waiver trade deadline. A more in-depth explanation of post-deadline trades at CBS Sports notes that teams can still essentially waive a player, allowing other clubs to make a claim on him. If he isn't claimed, he can be traded to any team.

The most recent example of such a scenario is the blockbuster trade that went down last August between the Boston Red Sox and the Los Angeles Dodgers, when Boston sent Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford, Josh Beckett and Nick Punto to the West Coast.

Since trades are still possible for the next month, here's a look at a few the Mariners should think about making.

Trade Endy Chavez

1 of 3

Endy Chavez saw ample playing time when Michael Morse, Michael Saunders and Franklin Gutierrez were all injured and Chavez played well.

Now that Saunders and Morse are back and Dustin Ackley has been playing some outfield, it’s overly crowded in Seattle and the situation will only worsen when Gutierrez returns from injury.

Endy, a 12-year veteran, doesn’t fit well into the Mariners’ future plans and has playoff experience. He brings speed and a reliable glove to the table, as well as a fundamentally sound all-around game.

A contending team could be attracted to Chavez and acquire him in exchange for a low- to mid-level prospect or cash.

Trade Brendan Ryan

2 of 3

Shortstop Brendan Ryan's offensive struggles have been well documented, but that's not what teams will be looking for from him anyway.

Ryan is one of the top defensive shortstops in the league and can add depth to the infield of a playoff-bound team.

The promotion of Brad Miller from the minors has worked out well so far, as he has been Seattle's starting shortstop ever since he arrived on June 28.

Ryan has the potential to be the difference elsewhere between a team making a playoff appearance or winning a World Series. He's that good on defense.

Maybe a change of scenery would help his offensive game too, but depending on the buyer, Ryan could hold a lot of value.

Trade Michael Morse

3 of 3

The Michael Morse experiment got off to a great start, but injuries have derailed his season and his numbers will look very pedestrian compared to what they could have been.

He has hit for power since returning to the active roster and is a very attractive option for a team looking to add a power bat to insert in the middle of the lineup.

Morse's contract expires at the end of this season. He will likely get some high offers in the postseason.

In the meantime, Morse is worth two or more mid-level prospects to the right team, but if clubs are weary of his injury troubles, they might be less willing to sell the farm to obtain him.
