Team-by-Team Orlando Summer League Primer

Grant HughesJun 8, 2018

Even though the image of LeBron James and the Miami Heat hoisting the Larry O'Brien Trophy is still visible in the rearview mirror, it's already time to look down the road at the Orlando Summer League as the NBA prepares to give fans a glimpse of next year's young stars.

A total of 10 NBA teams will get together in Central Florida, and each one of them will be loaded up with players trying to make their first impressions in the league. So, if you're curious about how Orlando Magic rookie Victor Oladipo might look as a point guard, or whether Perry Jones III will ever show signs of developing for the Oklahoma City Thunder, now's your chance to find out.

The reality is that most participants won't end up on NBA rosters, but with tons of rookies and a few intriguing veterans involved, this year's Orlando Summer League figures to feature plenty of excitement.

Before the action kicks off, read up on the rosters and key storylines to follow right here.

*Roster information via Hoopsworld.com and RealGM.com.

Boston Celtics

1 of 10

Roster

Tim Abromaitis, Courtney Fells, Jayson Granger, Lawrence Hill, Elie Holman, Colton Iverson, Darius Johnson-Odom, Fab Melo, Tony Mitchell, Kelly Olynyk, Phil Pressey, Omar Reed, Nolan Smith

What to Watch

New Boston Celtics head coach Brad Stevens won't be calling the shots—he'll leave that to assistant Jay Larranaga—but there will be plenty of intrigue surrounding the team nonetheless.

Rookies Kelly Olynyk and Colton Iverson will get their shots to prove they can be part of the rotation as Boston rebuilds this year. Plus, Fab Melo will have an opportunity to show he's grown enough to spend more time with the big boys and less time in the D-League this season.

Expect a very open competition for minutes as the Celtics look for young talent anywhere they can find it.

Brooklyn Nets

2 of 10

Roster

Keith Benson, Jamelle Hagins, Matt Janning, Damion James, David Lighty, Mason Plumlee, Dominique Sutton, Tornike Shengelia, Carleton Scott, Tyshawn Taylor, Kashif Watson, Chris Wright

What to Watch

Maybe you're interested to see how rookie Mason Plumlee fares against NBA talent. Or perhaps you'd like to closely examine whether Tyshawn Taylor has taken a step forward after a lackluster rookie season.

But it's much more likely that you're curious about how Jason Kidd will look in his first game action as an NBA head coach. If that's the case, you're in luck: Kidd will give Nets fans an early look at his coaching chops when he stalks the sidelines in Orlando.

It'll probably be difficult to discern whether he's got a handle on managing an NBA rotation or drawing up complicated sets in a format that basically amounts to a glorified pickup game. But hey, it'll still be cool to see how Kidd looks in his new role.

And since renowned coach killer Deron Williams isn't playing in Orlando, there's no way Kidd will be fired before the season starts.

Detroit Pistons

3 of 10

Roster

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Andre Drummond, Kim English, Ryan Evans, JaJuan Johnson, Viacheslav Kravtsov, Korie Lucious, Khris Middleton, Tony Mitchell, Travis Peterson, E.J. Singler, Kyle Singler, Peyton Siva

What to Watch

The Detroit Pistons are going to be a fun team to watch this summer. Andre Drummond is a lock to throw down a dozen or so monstrous slams on whichever poor sap happens to be in the vicinity of the rim when he gets the ball. And Kentavious Caldwell-Pope should get a chance to show he's ready to shine at the next level.

Plus, Peyton Siva is bound to play with a feisty flare, and there'll even be a pair of Singler brothers.

Oh, and this summer would also be a very good time for Kim English to show he's an NBA player. Detroit desperately needs its guards to score and space the floor. If English shows he can do those things, he's got a chance to earn some rotation minutes during the regular season.

Houston Rockets

4 of 10

Roster

James Anderson, Patrick Beverley, Vander Blue, Isaiah Canaan, Jack Cooley, Robert Covington, Jordan Henriquez, Tyler Honeycutt, Terrence Jones, Toure' Murry, Tim Ohlbrecht, Greg Smith, Caper Ware, B.J. Young

What to Watch

Patrick Beverley outplayed Jeremy Lin for a good chunk of the regular season last year, and he carved out an even bigger chunk of playing time during the Houston Rockets' short playoff run. If he comes out and dominates in Orlando, Houston is going to have no choice but to hand over the starting point guard job to him.

There are a ton of promising rookies on the Rockets roster, with Vander Blue, Isaiah Canaan and B.J. Young looking particularly intriguing.

In addition, Greg Smith, who looked excellent in limited playing time for Houston last year, will be looking to prove he's worthy of a larger role alongside Dwight Howard next season.

Indiana Pacers

5 of 10

Roster

Rasual Butler, Chris Daniels, Micah Downs, Jonny Flynn, Austin Freeman, Steven Gray, Ben Hansbrough, Justin Harper, Solomon Hill, Ron Howard, Orlando Johnson, Jerome Jordan, Julian Mavunga, Miles Plumlee, Travis Releford, Donald Sloan, Djibril Thiam, Christian Watford, Chris Wright

What to Watch

The first thing to watch with the Indiana Pacers' summer league team is how many rows of bench seats there are. With a massive, 19-man roster, there are going to be players stashed all over the place.

Beyond that, there are a couple of undrafted rookies worth watching. Christain Watford from Indiana and Travis Releford from Kansas are both highly experienced college players from prestigious programs. There may not be room for both on the Pacers roster, but there's a chance that one of these mature rookies gets a long look.

If Indy wants perimeter shooting, Watford could be the guy to keep.

And if you're into reclamation projects, Jonny Flynn will get a chance to prove that he was worth the Minnesota Timberwolves' lottery pick just a few years ago.

Miami Heat

6 of 10

Roster

Jackie Carmichael, Ian Clark, Vincent Council, Dewayne Dedmon, LaRon Dendy, Larry Drew II, Michael Dunigan, James Ennis, Eric Griffin, Scotty Hopson, Cedric Jackson, Myck Kabongo, D.J. Kennedy, James Nunnally, D.J. Stephens, Jarvis Varnado

What to Watch

There's not a ton of exciting talent here, but that's not exactly a shock. The Miami Heat haven't really had an opportunity to stockpile high draft picks lately; winning back-to-back NBA titles tends to have that effect.

But undrafted rookie Myck Kabongo is a supremely talented player. If he has his head on straight, there's a chance that he'll force the Heat to consider keeping him around as a third point guard.

Beyond that, Dewayne Dedmon is massive but extremely raw.

Oh, and if Memphis rookie D.J. Stephens gets loose on the break or manages to get a running start in a half-court set, watch out. There might not be a more electrifying dunker on any summer league team.

Oklahoma City Thunder

7 of 10

Roster

Steven Adams, Ron Anderson, Dwight Buycks, Reggie Jackson, Grant Jerrett, Perry Jones III, Kyle Kuric, Jeremy Lamb, DeAndre Liggins, Daniel Orton, Andre Roberson, Andrew Smith, Michael Snaer, Tony Taylor

What to Watch

The Oklahoma City Thunder are desperately hoping to get breakout performances from Reggie Jackson, Jeremy Lamb and Perry Jones III.

Jackson showed flashes of being a real threat when Russell Westbrook went down in the postseason, so if he can prove that his emergence was no mirage, he'll be assured of a bigger role during the 2013-14 season.

Jones III is still a project, but he was viewed as an absolute steal coming out of Baylor a year ago. And Lamb was thought to be one of the more valuable pieces that came back to OKC in the James Harden trade. Both of them are still young enough to improve, but if they flame out this summer, the Thunder aren't going to be happy about it.

In addition, Oklahoma City will showcase rookies Steven Adams and Andre Roberson. The former is a raw center from Pittsburgh with serious size and lots of room to grow, and the latter is an exciting athlete with a Shawn Marion-like ceiling.

Orlando Magic

8 of 10

Roster

Jared Berggren, Keith Clanton, Glen Dandridge, Matt Gatens, Maurice Harkless, Tobias Harris, DeQuan Jones, Doron Lamb, Shane Lawal, Rodney McGruder, Ramone Moore, Andrae Nelson, Andrew Nicholson, Victor Oladipo, Kyle O'Quinn, Romero Osby, A.J. Slaughter, Eric Wise

What to Watch

Orlando Magic fans are going to get an early look at a good chunk of what the team's future starting lineup might look like. With Maurice Harkless, Tobias Harris and Andrew Nicholson all slated to suit up, the Magic's summer league squad will have three players who logged major NBA minutes last year. That trio should have an easy time of it against some of the lesser competition in Orlando.

The real story here is Victor Oladipo, though. The Magic are apparently planning to try him out as a point guard, according to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski—an exciting experiment that comes with very little downside. Oladipo is a tireless worker, so it's possible that he'll pick up enough of the position's nuance to function as something like a poor man's Russell Westbrook.

And if things don't work out, it's really not the end of the world for the Magic. They'll just find a point guard in the lottery next year.

Philadelphia 76ers

9 of 10

Roster

Michael Carter-Williams, D.J. Cooper, Micheal Eric, Justin Holiday, Arsalan Kazemi, Travis Leslie, Zeke Marshall, Trevor Mbakwe, Brock Motum, Arnett Moultrie, Rodney Williams, Khalif Wyatt

What to Watch

Michael Carter-Williams is pretty much it for the Philadelphia 76ers. The rookie point guard from Syracuse is probably going to step right into the slot vacated by Jrue Holiday as the team's floor general, and he'll get his first chance to prove he's ready in Orlando.

It'll be interesting to see if MCW shows a more aggressive mentality than the one that marked his time under Jim Boeheim. A pure distributor, Carter-Williams' occasional reluctance to shoot often hurt his college team.

If he's going to stick as a starter in the NBA, he'll have to prove he's willing (and able) to knock down a perimeter shot once in a while.

Utah Jazz

10 of 10

Roster

Jeff Brooks, William Buford, Trey Burke, Alec Burks, Dionte Christmas, Jeremy Evans, Tony Gaffney, Rudy Gobert, Drew Gordon, Rodney Green, Rick Jackson, Delroy James, Rasid Mahalbasic, James Mays, Amath M'Baye, Jerel McNeal, Kevin Murphy, Chris Roberts, Michael Stockton

What to Watch

Trey Burke will get his first chance to prove he's ready to be the next great point guard in the Utah Jazz's storied history. Of course, he'll do so alongside Michael Stockton, the son of the greatest floor general in franchise history.

In addition to Burke's first look, there's raw talent all over Utah's roster. Drew Gordon made headlines last month for dunking on Jeremy Lin in a pro-am game, Rudy Gobert could be a promising big man down the line, and Alec Burks desperately needs to assert himself.

Guard play will be key for the Jazz this summer, as the team's young frontcourt trio of Enes Kanter, Derrick Favors and Gordon Hayward appear ready for prime time. Those three won't be in Orlando, but Utah hopes that a couple of backcourt players will emerge this summer to play alongside the team's young core.
