Best Football Manager Tirades of All Time

James McNicholasJun 8, 2018

There are few things more entertaining than watching a football manager lose his cool.

These highly-paid professionals generally conduct themselves with class and dignity. However, when the mask drops we see the rage that bubbles underneath.

Over the next 10 slides, we rank the greatest football manager tirades of all time.

10. Arsene Wenger Denies He Is Set to Sign a New Contract

1 of 10

Usually, football managers react angrily to speculation that their tenure may be approaching a close. This rant from Arsene Wenger was particularly bizarre because it concerned speculation that he was about to extend rather than end his stay in North London.

The usually placid Wenger was clearly piqued by what he labelled "wrong information" about a new contract.

The Daily Mail has a full transcript of Wenger's attack on Mail journalist Neil Ashton.

9. Joe Kinnear Introduces the World to Yohan Kebab

2 of 10

After being appointed as Newcastle United's director of football, Joe Kinnear took to the airwaves to launch an impassioned defence of his credentials.

Unfortunately, Kinnear appeared to be unfamiliar with the names of several Newcastle stars, infamously calling midfielder Yohan Cabaye "Yohan Kebab."

Kinnear also managed to belittle the Newcastle fans in the midst of his tirade. The interview has done little to improve Kinnear's popularity on Tyneside.

8. Sir Alex Ferguson Calls Newcastle a "Wee Club"

3 of 10

If Newcastle fans were irked by Joe Kinner's antics, they were equally miffed to be referred to as a "wee club" by Sir Alex Ferguson in December 2012.

Ferguson's rants have become infamous. He was just as caustic with journalists as with his players.

Certain journalists will doubtless be delighted to be out of the firing line now that Ferguson has announced his retirement.

7. Rafa Benitez: Facts

4 of 10

Sir Alex Ferguson is the king of mind games.

In this press conference by Rafa Benitez from January 2009, the full extent of Ferguson's influence on Benitez was made painfully clear. Even Benitez's carefully prepared notes can not disguise his rage.

6. Sir Alex Ferguson Defends Juan Sebastian Veron

5 of 10

Sir Alex Ferguson does not take kindly to criticism.

When the press openly questioned the decision to sign Argentinian playmaker Juan Sebastien Veron, Ferguson responded with a four-letter onslaught and labelled the media coverage "a joke."

After this aggressive display, few journalists mustered the courage to query the signing of Veron again.

5. Ian Holloway on the FIFA Winter World Cup

6 of 10

Ian Holloway is one of the world's most charismatic managers. His entertaining rants have become the stuff of legend.

In this press conference, Holloway dissected the politics of FIFA with humour and passion. Even FIFA president Sepp Blatter was not spared Holloway's rage.

4. Kevin Keegan Would Love It

7 of 10

Kevin Keegan joins Rafa Benitez as another victim of Sir Alex Ferguson's psychological warfare.

As the race for the 1995-96 Premier League title reached an exhilarating climax, Keegan boiled over. Live on television, Keegan launched an attack on Ferguson, stating that he would "love it" if Newcastle could beat United to the championship.

It wasn't to be. United emerged victorious and Keegan's managerial career began a steady decline.

3. Harry Redknapp Isn't Happy

8 of 10

Harry Redknapp's transfer nous has long seen him regarded as one of football's most canny operators.

However, in September 2010 Redknapp reacted furiously to this reporter's assertion that he was a "wheeler-dealer."

Despite Redknapp's denials, his subsequent big spending at QPR suggests that the journalist may well have had a point.

2. Ian Holloway Attacks Wayne Rooney

9 of 10

Stick a microphone in front of Ian Holloway and the talkative manager will espouse on almost any subject.

On this occasion, he carried out a systematic attack on Wayne Rooney after the England striker declared his intention to leave Manchester United.

With this inspired soliloquy, Holloway won many fans at Old Trafford and beyond.

1. Joe Kinnear Lets Rip

10 of 10

Be warned: the video in this slide is not for the faint-hearted or easily offended.

In October 2008, Joe Kinnear embarked upon an expletive-laded assault on the North East media. The Guardian kindly provide an edited transcript of one of the most explosive press conferences in football history.

Kinnear stands alone as the undisputed king of the tirade.
