Manchester City Transfer Tracker: Week of June 17 News and Rumours

Phil KeidelJun 8, 2018

Manchester City continues to see their club mentioned in nearly every significant rumor published during this transfer window. And why not? When a club can afford any player, no player is truly off limits.

The more you look at City's roster, though, the more you wonder where any of these rumored acquisitions would play. Or when.

City do not need a keeper as long as Joe Hart is at or near the top of his game.

City's back line just conceded the fewest goals in the Premier League despite an off year from Vincent Kompany and, in Matija Nastasic, they have a bona fide long-term keeper.

The midfield is beyond crowded with top drawer talent. Yaya Toure, David Silva, Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Samir Nasri...the quality runs deep.

Check this: City could run Jack Rodwell, Gareth Barry, Javi Garcia and James Milner out at midfield as a cohesive "second unit" of midfielders. That foursome would start for half the Premiership.

Given the foregoing, City's only truly logical move (assuming they do not sell off some of their midfielders) is to purchase a great striker.

As stated before in this space, Napoli's Edinson Cavani will lead off in these Manchester City trackers until he signs with City or goes somewhere else.

Bang the drum slowly, but bang it nonetheless.

Edinson Cavani

1 of 5

Edinson Cavani keeps getting his name in the newspaper for doing nothing at all.

So does his father.

Cavani's sire was quoted again this past weekend, this time by The Telegraph, speculating about his son's next side"Cavani's intention is to play for Madrid...(h)e is excited about it and is very willing to see it through."

Even City's erstwhile manager, Roberto Mancini, cannot seem to keep Cavani's name out of his mouth.

According to the Daily Mail, Mancini was very recently quoted on his desperate wish to bring Cavani to the Etihad when the club was still his to manage: ‘When I was at City I often spoke about Cavani with the management. I often talked with the board about Edinson because he interested us a lot."

At some point, City fans might wish Cavani would just go ahead and sign with Madrid if that is what he really wants.

Among other things, it would keep him away from Chelsea.

Isco

From the Department of Redundancy Department, Isco still wants to come to Manchester City to play for the Sky Blues' new manager, Manuel Pellegrini.

The English media is beating this angle into the ground because, to be fair to them, nothing is actually happening with this story.

Thus you get today's piece from David Anderson in The Mirror telling you a lot of things you already knew.

Pellegrini wants Isco. "Pellegrini is determined to make Isco his first signing since being unveiled last week, and knows the Spain Under-21 midfielder intimately from their time at Malaga," wrote Anderson.

Isco wants to play for Pellegrini. "He's a great coach. He did an impressive job at Malaga...I know how he works and he has played a key role in my career so far during our two years together at Malaga," Isco said.

Not that there is anything wrong with all of this mutual admiration.

Just get on with it already.

Carlos Tevez

3 of 5

As with Edinson Cavani and Isco, the fate of Carlos Tevez buzzes and hums on the wires without all that much actually going on.

ESPNFC.com ran a story very recently detailing the "action," such as it is.

"Affluent Ligue 1 clubs Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco have both been linked with Tevez, while Juventus are also said to be admirers of the Argentina international," the story goes.

Tevez is not giving much away, either. "I really don't know anything about my future, I have to wait for news. I am on vacations and for the moment I haven't been told anything," Tevez said.

Okay then. We'll have to check back, you know, later.

Gonzalo Higuain

4 of 5

Manchester City's summer transfer momentum has largely stalled after the signings of Fernandinho and Jesus Navas.

When that happens, sometimes the major media outlets have to start spitballing their own ideas. Which is how you get the Daily Mail speculating that Manuel Pellegrini might try to pry Gonzalo Higuain from Real Madrid.

Per David Cartlidge, "Pellegrini’s a huge fan of mobile forwards, and while City have one in the shape of Sergio Aguero another in Higuain would be a huge bonus."

Right he is. Also, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi could help out at the Etihad.

You can almost hear the Daily Mail saying "right, we'll get right on that!"

Scott Sinclair

5 of 5

In this relatively fallow period in the summer transfer window, sometimes the surprise non-departure of an out-of-favor player ranks as news.

Goal.com reported very recently that last summer's biggest bust, Scott Sinclair, is in line for a "lifeline" from incoming boss Manuel Pellegrini.

"Pellegrini's arrival as City's new manager could signal a reprieve for a player who looked finished with the Premier League runners-up," according to Goal.com's Paul Clennam.

This is not as farfetched as it may seem on the surface.

Sinclair is unlikely to take much playing time away from Jesus Navas, but if he can play the same sort of role in Pellegrini's system Sinclair could yet prove valuable to Manchester City.
