Stock Up, Stock Down for Orioles Top 10 Prospects for Week of May 27

Drew ReynoldsJun 1, 2018

Last week was a very mediocre week for the Orioles' minor league affiliates. Only the Advanced-A Frederick Keys played to a winning record, going 5-3.

The other three affiliates struggled, as both Triple-A Norfolk and Double-A Bowie went 3-4, while Single-A Delmarva had the worst week, going 2-5.

Prospects Glynn Davis (tenth, OF), Branden Kline (eighth, SP), Jonathan Schoop (third, IF) and Dylan Bundy (first, SP) all currently remain on the DL, so the following update will not include them. Instead, the update will include the top 10 active prospects.

No. 14 overall prospect, Steve Johnson, will also not be included as his "prospect" label may be coming to an end.

Without further ado, here's this week's update.

Ranking based on MLB.com's ranking of Orioles' prospects.

15. Devin Jones

1 of 10

Team: Double-A Bowie

Position: SP

2013 Stats: 4-2, 10 GS, 4.34 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 44/17 K/BB (Between Advanced-A and Double-A)

Last Week's Stats: 1 GS, 6.0 IP, 3 ER, 9 H, 2 BB, 6 K

Jones, the Orioles' ninth-round draft pick in the 2011 draft, seems to have toppled the learning curve after struggling upon his call up to Bowie. The 22-year-old has pitched much better as of late, as he hasn't given up more than three runs in any of his last four starts.

In his only start this week he held his opponents scoreless through five innings before allowing three runs in the top of the sixth. Bowie went on to lose the game 6-5, while Jones got a no-decision.

Jones was coming off three straight wins, so this start was somewhat of a downer. But even though he allowed more baserunners than optimal, it wasn't a bad outing.

He'll look to continue his streak of solid starts for Bowie on Tuesday, where he is the likely starter.

13. Josh Hader

2 of 10

Team: Single-A Delmarva

Position: SP

2013 Stats: 1-2, 9 GS, 2.28 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 44/25 K/BB

Last Week's Stats: 1 GS, 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 5 H, 4 BB, 2 K

The local kid out of Old Mill High School in Millersville, Maryland continues to surprise many with his success. Only 19, Hader has pitched well where ever the Orioles have put him since being drafted in the 19th round of last year's draft.

His last two starts, however, have been rather shaky. In those starts he's gone a total of 10.2 innings and has allowed 13 hits and seven walks. To Hader's credit, he's only allowed four earned runs in that span.

Command seems to be Hader's biggest issue going forward, but he's still young and that could improve in time. Even with control problems, the Orioles must be be pleased from what they've seen from the youngster so far in his short professional career.

12. Tim Berry

3 of 10

Team: Advanced-A Frederick

Position: SP

2013 Stats: 3-3, 11 GS, 4.63 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 53/16 K/BB

Last Week's Stats: 2 GS, 1-1, 7.0 IP, 10 ER, 15 H, 2 BB, 5 K

Last week wasn't a good week for Tim Berry, but it did improve as it went along.

The 50th-round draft pick from 2009 was shelled in his first start of the week. Berry gave up nine runs, eight earned, on eight hits, while only lasting an inning picking up the loss.

In his next start, the 22-year-old was much improved. Lasting six innings, Berry only allowed two runs and picked up the win.

Berry's numbers tend to fool you. His strikeout and walk ratios remain solid, but that doesn't necessarily correlate to success.

11. Adrian Marin

4 of 10

Team: Single-A Delmarva

Position: SS

2013 Stats: .270, 1 HR, 21 RBI, 15 R

Last Week's Stats: 7-19, .368 AVG, 4 RBI, 5 R

After an abysmal April, in which he averaged .214 and scored only one run in 20 games, Adrian Marin has turned it on as of late.

Marin hit .315 in May and is producing more like the Orioles expected he would when they drafted him in the third round of last year's draft. His last week was one of his best and he currently is on a four-game hit streak.

Only 19, Marin has a long way to go to reach the majors. But, if last week is any indication, he'll be there eventually.

9. Mike Wright

5 of 10

Team: Double-A Bowie

Position: SP

2013 Stats: 6-0, 11 GS, 3.30 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 56/19 K/BB

Last Week's Stats: 1 GS, 5.0 IP, 4 R, 0 ER, 6 H, 0 BB, 5 K

Wright produced an odd line in his only start of last week, giving up four unearned runs.

All the runs came in the bottom of the third in Bowie's game versus New Britain on Friday. After Wright retired the first two batters of the inning, a hit by pitch, followed by an error set the stage for an RBI double, which was immediately followed by a two-run homer. The rest of the game went very well for Wright, but he got the no decision as Bowie ended up winning the game in extras, 7-6.

The unearned run has been extremely prevalent for Wright this season, as nine of his 30 allowed runs are unearned. While runs of that nature usually hurt the starting pitcher's win-loss record, it hasn't hurt Wright, as he is still undefeated on the season.

7. Xavier Avery

6 of 10

Team: Triple-A Norfolk

Position: OF

2013 Stats: .271 AVG, 1 HR, 15 RBI, 37 R (between Double-A and Triple-A)

Last Week's Stats: 5-23, .217 AVG, 3 RBI, 1 R

Xavier Avery has been in a slump since his promotion to Norfolk earlier in May. He has shown some of signs of breaking out of it, however, as he is currently riding a four-game hit streak.

Strikeouts remain the biggest problem for Avery. He had eight over the past week, which brings his season total to 60.

With the speed he possess, putting the ball in play is key to Avery's success.

Stock: Down

6. L.J. Hoes

7 of 10

Team: Triple-A Norfolk

Position: OF

2013 Stats: .280 AVG, 1 HR, 21 RBI, 32 R

Last Week's Stats: 3-23, .130 AVG, 1 RBI, 4 R

Last week was without a doubt L.J. Hoes' worst week of the season.

His averaged dropped roughly 20 points and other than a 2-for-4 game early in the week, the 23-year-old was silent.

Slumps happen to everyone, and that's all this seems to be for Hoes. He was given the day off on Sunday and he'll look to right the ship next week.

Stock: Down

5. Nick Delmonico

8 of 10

Team: Advanced-A Frederick

Position: 3B/1B

2013 Stats: .300 AVG, 7 HR, 21 RBI, 15 R

Last Week's Stats: 4-21, .190 AVG, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 2 R

Nick Delmonico's hamstring problems seem to be behind him for the time being, as he was able to play in four straight games after missing a double-header on Tuesday and another game on Wednesday.

While not putting up the greatest numbers, the 20-year-old did hit a couple of homers and has gotten a hit in the last couple games. Still, the best news on Delmonico is that he's playing.

His season stat-line remains impressive, as he's put up those numbers in only 24 games played.

Stock: Up

3. Eduardo Rodriguez

9 of 10

Team: Advanced-A Frederick

Position: SP

2013 Stats: 6-2, 10 GS, 3.13 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 49/20 K/BB

Last Week's Stats: 1 GS, W, 6.1 IP, 1 ER, 5 H, 3 BB, 3 K

Once again, Eduardo Rodriguez's only start of the week was a very good one.

He finished the month of May with a 5-0 record and a 2.23 ERA in six starts. Opponents only hit to a .208 average and did not hit a home run in May off the lefty, who continues to get deep in games.

It's been a very good year for the 20-year-old Venezuelan. He currently leads the Carolina League in both wins and innings pitched (63.1).

Stock: Up

2. Kevin Gausman

10 of 10

Team: Baltimore Orioles

Position: SP

2013 Minor League Stats: 2-4, 8 GS, 3.11 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 49/5 K/BB

2013 Major League Stats: 0-2, 3 GS, 7.20 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 9/3 K/BB

Last Week's Stats: 2 GS, 0-1,10.0 IP, 8 ER, 13 H, 1 BB, 4 K

It was a tale of two extremes for Gausman last week as he continues to try and adjust to major league hitters. His first start of the week was very bad, while his second start was very good.

The home run ball has hurt the 22-year-old so far in his time in the majors, as he's surrendered five, including three in his start against the Nationals on Tuesday. In said start, Gausman went four innings, giving up seven runs, all earned.

In his start on Sunday against Detroit, a solo shot from Prince Fielder was all the rookie would allow as he went six strong innings.

Though it was never confirmed, if Gausman had another poor outing on Sunday, he could have easily been sent down. But he pitched very well, so he'll continue to get starts at the major league level. And who knows, he may never ride another minor league bus again.
