Can Tiger Woods Capture Another Green Jacket?
Even though Tiger Woods hasn't won a major tournament since the 2008 U.S. Open, he continues to be the talk of the PGA Tour. Tiger recently regained the No. 1 ranking in the world and has been playing his best golf in years as he already has three victories in 2013. That naturally made him a favorite to contend for the green jacket at the Masters.
Woods already has four green jackets to his credit, but there's no doubt that he wants another one. Tiger had a steady first round that put him in contention, and he seemed to be well on his way to a dominant second round. Woods was tied for the lead entering the 15th hole, but a tough break put his ball in the water as it struck the flag stick. Woods dropped a stroke on that hole and lost another one on the 18th.
More bad news came Woods' way prior to the start of the third round. After hitting the ball into the hazard on the 15th hole on Friday, Tiger's drop came into question. Woods dropped the ball two yards further back than he was supposed to, and he was penalized two strokes because of it. Tiger isn't out of it, but it will take a big effort in order for him to end his major drought.
How Will Tianlang Guan Finish Up His Tournament?
Many golf fans were intrigued by the novelty of a 14-year-old kid qualifying for the Masters, but perhaps nobody expected Tianlang Guan to perform as well as he has. Despite all of the pressure placed on his shoulders, Guan fired an impressive one-over round on Thursday and followed that up with a three-over second round. That put Guan right on the cut line, but he managed to make it and continue playing through the weekend.
Guan's tournament has not progressed without controversy, though. The youngster was penalized one stroke on the 17th hole during the second round because of slow play. Guan actually scored a par on that hole, but it was counted as a bogey due to the penalty. That could have very easily sent the Chinese phenom home early, but he was lucky enough to make it through.
Nobody honestly expected Guan to contend, but he definitely raised expectations due to his mature play. Guan isn't going to be a factor on Sunday; however, there will still be plenty of eyes on him. The true pressure came in the first two rounds as he was trying to make the cut. Guan can simply go out there and have fun on Sunday, and hopefully he does that.
Is Jason Day for Real?
Jason Day has just one PGA Tour victory to his credit, but most would agree that he is one of the most promising young players in the sport. The 25-year-old Aussie is no stranger to success in major tournaments as he finished second in both the Masters and the U.S. Open in 2011. Day had a rough 2012 in that regard, but he has flashed some of that 2011 magic already this year.
Day made his move during the second round of the Masters and seized the 36-hole lead with a score of six-under par. Day remained steady in the third round, but the true test will be how he handles the pressure on Sunday. With so many other hungry players lurking, there is a lot for Day to worry about, and it won't be easy for him to keep his composure.
With that said, Day has a great all-around game and he has experience when it comes to being near the lead in the final round of a major. He has been unable to seal the deal thus far, but maybe things will be different this time. Day has the tools necessary to get the job done, so he simply has to finish.
