Masters Odds 2013: Players Sure to Outperform Expectations

Richard LangfordJun 5, 2018

While the favorites justifiably garner the bulk of the attention heading into the Masters, there is just as good a chance that an underdog will shock the world and walk away with the green jacket.

After all, nine of the past 11 winners in majors have been first-timers.

These following three guys have all the tools to pull off the upset win, and they will all outperform what their odds suggest.

  19. Graeme McDowell, 50/1
  20. Jason Day, 50/1

Nicolas Colsaerts, 80-1

Nicolas Colsaerts is a true boom or bust player, and he has the game to succeed at Augusta. For starters, Colsaerts can absolutely bomb it off the tee. He leads the Tour in driving distance.

Last year, we saw the Belgium Bomber live up to his immense potential with an incredible Ryder Cup, and by winning the Volvo World Match Play Championship.

Colsaerts is not a good putter. However, he has good control with his irons and is 11th on the Tour in greens in regulation. This will help him put the ball in the right spot on the Augusta greens and compensate for his poor putting.

This is Colsaerts first Masters but he is an experienced golfer, and as he showed in the Ryder Cup last year, he can handle the pressure on the big stage.

Steve Stricker, 50-1

Steve Stricker has played a very light schedule this year, which has undoubtedly helped him fly under the radar.

However, in the four Tour events he's played, he has two second-place finishes. The experienced Stricker will have himself ready for a nice run at the year's first major.

Stricker does not have the kind of distance typically found in winners of the green jacket. However, he is a precision player with a nice approach game and a phenomenal putter.

This helps explain how he has an 11th- and sixth-place finish in his last four trips to Augusta.

Stricker is headed for a top-10 finish this year's Masters.

Scott Piercy, 200-1

If Scott Piercy is going to make waves at Augusta, he will have to reverse the trend of his recent play. He's missed the cut his last two times out.

However, he has shown good form this year with a third-place finish in Phoenix, and he also made it to the third round in the Accenture Match Play Championship.

Piercy will reverse his trend here as his game sets up nicely for success at Augusta. He has great length off the tee, and he is 19th on the Tour in distance this year.

He is also a solid putter, and is 36th in strokes gained putting.

Piercy has picked up a Tour win in each of the past two years. Piercy will grab a top-30 finish, and if he gets some momentum, he could manage to work his way into contention.
