Another Pivotal Weekend in the EPL

Jeff HarbertMar 27, 2008

All eyes will be on the Premiership’s top three clubs this weekend as the season takes another step towards discovering who will be this year’s champions. Reigning champions and this year’s leaders Manchester United are at home to Aston Villa, where they will hope to stretch their lead to eight points.

Chelsea play on Sunday against Middlesbrough and Avram Grant’s side will be expecting nothing less than a win against Gareth Southgate’s men. Arsenal faces relegation strugglers Bolton and will be desperate to claim their first league win in six attempts.

With the title United’s to lose now that they’ve opened up a five point gap with seven games remaining, Patrice Evra claims that every remaining game will be treated like a cup final.  "We have seven games left to play and we need to win them too - they are like seven finals," he said.

After last year’s two horse race with Chelsea, Ferguson’s troops certainly have the experience of winning when it matters and chasing after a title. Only Sir Alex’s summer signings are yet to experience the nail biting finale which is undoubtedly in store for them.

But with Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney earning their first league medals last year, and Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs adding to their hefty collection, United have plenty of experience to bank on in the closing weeks of the season.

With a record nine Premiership medals to his name, Ryan Giggs will be hoping to make his experience valuable in the vital games ahead. The Welsh Wizard is already the most successful player in the history of English football, but there’s no denying he’ll hope to add another Premiership medal to his collection.

And with Gary Neville still not at full fitness, United will be relying on the leadership and experience of Giggs in the pursuit for the title.

It is a make or break weekend for all three teams at the top. Another slip for Arsenal would see them lose further ground in the title race they once had control over. Chelsea won’t want to drop points after fighting so hard to get back into the title race people had ruled them out of only a few months ago. And as for Manchester United, it is vital they avoid any slip-ups with both Chelsea and Arsenal breathing heavily down their necks.

Despite there still being seven games left in the season, this weekend’s fixtures could prove to be pivotal in the title race. Any mistakes made now by any of the three title chasers will certainly have its consequences.

In the meantime, there is nothing more to do then sit back, relax, and enjoy a captivating weekend of football. Well unless you’re a United, Chelsea, or Arsenal fan of course. If that’s the case, then you might just want to sit up and watch closely as you observe a nail-biting weekend of football.
