Giants vs. Jets: Tim Tebow and Wildcat Is Preseason's Most Annoying Storyline
If I were Tim Tebow, I'm pretty sure I would get tired of hearing about myself and the Wildcat offense. And I would certainly understand why everyone else was annoyed about all the attention being placed on the New York Jets this offseason.
But so it goes. Tebow carries around with him a horde of publicity this day, perhaps the only athlete who does so despite doing nothing controversial or, in the case of this offseason, anything at all except being traded.
And so, on the eve of a meaningless preseason game between the Jets and New York Giants, much of the talk has turned to the possibility that Rex Ryan might unveil some of the super-secret, highly classified Wildcat offense the team is drawing up.

Oh, goodie.
The Wildcat isn't really that much of a novelty any more, and truthfully, it's not even all that effective these days. As Justin Tuck told Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News, he's not too worried about it.
"“You definitely have to prepare for (Tebow) because he’s a dynamic player,” Giant defensive end Justin Tuck said. “But there ain’t too many things you can do out of the Wildcat. It’s pretty simple when you think about it.”
"
Don’t tell that to Ryan, who thinks the threat of the “Tebow-Cat” should make opposing defenses need some extra time to prepare. At least that’s the theory. The Giants aren’t so sure.
“A little bit,” Tuck added. “Not as much as I think they would like.”
There are so many more interesting things we could all be talking about in the NFL this preseason.
The contract dispute of Maurice Jones-Drew. A new dawn for the Indianapolis Colts. Whether or not Joe Flacco and the Ravens can break through and win the Super Bowl this year. Which quarterback will win MVP this season. The impact of Peyton Manning in Denver. Which team will win a competitive NFC East. Can Cam Newton replicate his epic 2011 season?
Or we could all just gush over Calvin Johnson for a while, because he's freaking amazing.
But no. We get SportsCenter giving us 24/7 analysis on whether or not Tim Tebow will overtake Mark Sanchez, or whether or not the Wildcat will be effective, or hey, we can all just WISH TIM TEBOW A HAPPY BIRTHDAY SO WE GET A RATINGS SPIKE OR MORE CLICKS!
But let's be honest for a second. Take away Tebow and the Wildcat, and are the Jets really relevant this season? Are they a playoff team?
I don't think so. I don't think they're a playoff team with Tebow and the Wildcat, to be honest. In fact, the only way I would care about the whole thing is if he started a polka band called "Tebow and the Wildcats" after his career and toured the country.
Now that I would be interested in.
At this point, Tebow isn't a backup quarterback, he's an idea. A symbol for some, a polarizing force for others, an easy way to attract viewers or readers for most (no, the irony of that sentence isn't lost on me).
But he's not a backup quarterback to America. Because if he was, why the hell would we be talking about him?
