Dwight Howard Trade: Kobe Bryant Weighs in on Superman's Arrival in LA
Even though Kobe Bryant is thousands of miles away from Los Angeles helping the United States chase another Olympic gold medal in London, he couldn't resist the urge to give his thoughts about the trade that will bring Dwight Howard to the Lakers.
"Well, it looks like Superman has found a home," Bryant wrote in a Facebook post. The longtime face of the Lakers went on to give a shout out to Andrew Bynum. The center was sent to the Philadelphia 76ers as a part of the four-team agreement.
Bryant then shifted his focus back to Howard and the Lakers:
"I know LA is excited about the deal and rightfully so. The Lakers landed a piece that will hopefully carry the franchise long after I'm gone. I have spoken to Dwight Howard already and we are locked and loaded to bring back the title.
"
Howard would have been with Bryant in London if not for a back injury which forced him to miss the Olympics. He was a key piece of the 2008 team that won gold in Beijing and would have been a major contributor again during the repeat bid.
Although he missed out on that opportunity, a new one has been awarded to him with the move to Los Angeles. Howard had been seeking an exit from the Orlando Magic for nearly a year and the team finally gave in to his wishes.
Once the deal is finalized by the league Howard will join a roster that already features Pau Gasol, Steve Nash and Bryant. The arrivals of Howard and Nash should quickly rejuvenate a lineup that had become stagnant in recent seasons.
Bryant seems genuinely excited about his arrival. Even though the veteran shooting guard is only 33, he has a lot of miles on his legs and can't be certain how many more runs at a championship he has left in the tank.
Acquiring the NBA's premier paint defender and one of the best point guards to ever step on a basketball court will instantly increase Bryant's chances of getting another ring.
The fact the Lakers were able to figure out a way to land Howard without giving up both Bynum and Gasol is a huge victory. It will allow the team to keep its advantage in the paint, leaving more room for Bryant to operate on the perimeter.
It's a move that immediately puts the Lakers on level footing with the defending Western Conference champion Oklahoma City Thunder, and should ultimately give them an edge once the new lineup develops chemistry with each other.
That's all music to the ears of Bryant. He'll remain focused on the task at hand—Argentina, later on Friday—but it will be tough to blame him if he starts daydreaming about next season after another big deal to improve the Lakers' title hopes.
