NBA Draft Trade Rumors: Wizards Reportedly Fielding Calls for No. 3 Pick

Mike ChiariJun 27, 2012

As teams jockey for position ahead of Thursday night's NBA draft, the possibilities seem to be endless in terms of who certain teams might take and whether some teams are willing to trade up or down. One team that has reportedly been fielding calls, though, is the Washington Wizards, who hold the No. 3 overall selection in the draft.

According to Michael Lee of the Washington Post, the Wizards have been taking calls as teams may be looking to move up to the third spot in order to take Kansas forward Thomas Robinson. Wizards owner Ted Leonsis initially said that the Wiz would be keeping the selection, but if a good offer rolls in, it seems as though Washington might be open to a trade.

There are so many moving parts in this year's draft that the Wizards' decision likely rides on what the Charlotte Bobcats do at No. 2. Many believe that Charlotte likes Robinson as well since he is an obvious fit, but teams such as the Cleveland Cavaliers have been rumored to want to leapfrog the Wizards at No. 3 in order to select Florida guard Bradley Beal.

According to Lee, the Wizards like Beal, Kentucky forward Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and North Carolina forward Harrison Barnes, so they could conceivably trade down and get one of the players that they covet. One would think that Washington's main target is Beal since he is a shooting guard. Washington recently acquired center Emeka Okafor and forward Trevor Ariza from the New Orleans Hornets, so forward may not be as much of a priority.

There isn't much the Wizards can do to prevent a team like Cleveland from jumping up to the No. 2 slot in order to steal Beal from them, though. If that does happen, then the Wizards would be faced with an interesting prospect. Provided the Bobcats slide down to the fourth position, teams figure to be calling Washington nonstop in order to get the third pick and swipe Robinson from Charlotte.

Turnabout would be fair play in that situation as the Wizards would essentially be hanging the Bobcats out to dry right after Charlotte did the same thing. Lee didn't make any suggestions in terms of which teams might want to trade for the Wizards' pick in order to select Robinson, but logical options would seem to be the Sacramento Kings at No. 5, the Toronto Raptors at No. 8 and the Detroit Pistons at No. 9.

The Kings would seem to be the best fit as the Wizards would only have to move down two spots, they could pick up the No. 36 pick in the process, and they should still get one of the players that Lee believes they like. Provided the Bobcats trade out of the No. 2 spot, and the first three picks are Anthony Davis, Beal and Robinson, one of either Kidd-Gilchrist or Barnes will certainly be available to the Wizards at No. 5.

What the Wizards do with their pick seems to be dependent on a lot of things right now, but it mostly hinges on the Bobcats. If everything remains the status quo, then Washington ought to stay at No. 3 in order to take Beal as a complement to point guard John Wall. If that isn't the case, though, all bets are off.
