2012 NHL Draft Tracker: Complete Results From Round 1

Jesse ReedJun 7, 2018

The first round of the 2012 NHL draft is in the books, and there were some results we didn't see coming at the top of the draft.

The first pick was no shocker, though, as the Edmonton Oilers predictably selected Nail Yakupov out of Sarnia to come in and give them a boost on offense. Yakupov was widely regarded as the best overall player and clear No. 1 choice in the draft, and he'll make an immediate impact for the Oilers as a rookie.

The first head-scratcher came with the third overall pick when the Montreal Canadiens selected Alex Galchenyuk out of Sarnia.

Galchenyuk is a bit of a risk to start with, since he is coming off a torn ACL that kept him out of the entire season last year. ESPN Insider Greg Sonier had him ranked as the ninth-best player on his board, and it was a bit of a shock to see him selected this high.

Then, the Anaheim Ducks took a major gamble when they selected Hampus Lindholm with the No. 6 overall pick. Lindholm is a good player, but nobody had him ranked as high as this.

The biggest move of the night was when the Pittsburgh Penguins traded center Jordan Staal to the Carolina Hurricanes for the No. 8 overall pick, Brandon Suter and Brian Dumoulin. With that pick, they then reached a bit to grab Derrick Pouliot—the 23rd-ranked player on Sonier's big board.

As it is in every draft, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, though, and many a sure thing has gone on to become a major bust. This year's draft class will prove to be no different, as there are always going to be diamonds in the rough that shock everyone, along with the hyped players who fizzle out.
