Celtics vs. Heat: Rajon Rondo Will Prove He's NBA's Best Point Guard

Rob GoldbergJun 9, 2012

Rajon Rondo has been amazing this postseason, but a win tonight over the Miami Heat will prove that he is the best point guard in the NBA.

A few years ago, this notion would have sounded ridiculous. He was considered the weak spot on a Boston Celtics team that won the 2008 NBA Championship.

On a team that had recently acquired all-stars Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett to pair with Paul Pierce, Rondo was not asked to do much. The Kentucky grad did exactly what was needed as his team raised the Larry O'Brien trophy at the end of the year, though.

Since that time, Rondo has progressively improved to account for his aging teammates. He has steadily increased his assist numbers in each year of his six-year career, and he is the reason Boston is in position to reach the finals once again.

During the regular season, the point guard routinely did it all for the Celtics. He led the league with an amazing 11.7 assists per game, and he also finished the regular season with six triple-doubles. At just over 6'0", his ability to rebound has been the most surprising addition to his game.

However, many players succeed in the regular season without coming through when it matters in the postseason. This is not the case for Rondo.

The point guard has provided the Celtics with double-digit assists in 15 of the 18 games he has played in, an average of 11.8 per game. He has also provided some marquee games, adding two more triple-doubles and a 44-point masterpiece in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals. And he is responsible for either scoring or setting up more than half of Boston's baskets in the series.

There are a number of talented point guards in the league. Chris Paul and Deron Williams both run their offenses to perfection, and Russell Westbrook might be the best scorer in the league from the position. Each of these men are also better shooters than the Celtics guard. Still, Rondo's all-around game is the reason that his team is still alive and is one game from the NBA Finals.

Until LeBron James took over in Game 6, Rondo was the player to watch in a series that could feature as many as five Hall of Famers. A great performance in Game 7 will cement his status as the best the game has to offer.
