What We Learned From Tim Tebow's First Comments During Jets Offseason Workouts

Zach KruseJun 1, 2018

New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow was available to the media for the first time Thursday since the team began voluntary offseason workouts in April. To say reporters on the scene had a field day would be an understatement.

Tebow answered almost 50 questions, with most inquiries nothing more than a slight variation of a question posed earlier in the interview.

But through all the "I'm excited" and "It's great" answers, we did learn a thing or two from Tebow's first media availability. Below, we break down what Tebow said Thursday:

The relationship between Tebow and Mark Sanchez is good...for now

Both Tebow and Sanchez were asked about their personal and professional relationship incessantly, but there was little trepidation from Tebow's side. He seems confident that a working relationship between the two can work in New York.

"I think it will be great. We have a great relationship," Tebow said. "We're friends and we hang a lot on the practice field, in the locker room, in the weightroom and outside of the complex."

Tebow also mentioned that the two had dinner in New York City recently, so there's hope here that the two can hold this stressful situation together.

But being friendly now—when the quarterback hierarchy is still in place, Sanchez on top, Tebow as the backup—should be a piece of cake. Once fans start calling for Tebow when Sanchez inevitably struggles, the relationship could strain.

Playing something other than quarterback is in the cards

Tebow ensured reporters that he has yet to take reps at a position other than quarterback, but he didn't rule out helping out the Jets on special teams or at a different position within the offense.

"

I'm just doing whatever they want me to do. I'm just going out there and working hard right now and trying to get better in the weight room and on the practice field and just compete a little bit every day...Whatever they want me to do, they know that I'll do it with all my heart, so I'm just going to go into every day trying to get a little bit better.

"

It's very possible that the Jets could use Tebow as a protector on the punt team, and there figures to be a package of offensive plays installed for Tebow that wouldn't necessary have him playing quarterback full-time.

While Tebow obviously wants to play quarterback, the Jets will have to get creative if they want their backup on the field. As long as he's getting snaps, I don't see how the Jets could have a disgruntled Tebow on their hands down the road.

Tebow is still the master of sidestepping

Tebow was asked about wanting to be a starter in New York in over 10 different variations, but like he's done in front of a microphone so many times before, Tebow masterfully sidestepped the questions.

"

I just go out there every single day and compete as much as I can and try to be a great teammate. That's the great thing about football. You're together with these guys every day, training and working out, pushing each other and encouraging each other. That's fun to really build relationships. Even though it's only been three or four weeks, I feel like I've got a great relationship with a lot of guys in the locker room.

"

Given Tebow's answer, you'd be hard-pressed to predict that the question had anything to do with being a starter. But like the perfect-answer robot he is, Tebow stood in front of his locker room and gave a similar response to every one of the reporters' questions about being a starter.

The folks in New York will have difficulties getting Tebow to give them anything juicy when it comes to being a starter with the Jets. They'll inevitably continue to try, but expect answers that sound just like what Tebow gave Thursday.

The focus now is learning the offense

Amidst the questions regarding his relationship with Sanchez and desire to be the team's starter, a few good questions were actually asked. One came about the installation of the Jets' new offense under coordinator Tony Sparano.

"

I think every day we're learning. We're learning the offense, we're learning new situations and everything that's coming up. I think my whole career has helped to train me and prepare me for every situation I've been in, especially for now.

"

Tebow also mentioned that Sanchez is in the same learning stages with the offense that he's currently in.

"We're learning the same offense, something that we haven't been in before, and so just really trying to learn it together. It's been fun," Tebow said.
