NBA Rumors: Why Deron Williams Would Be Smart to Re-Sign with Brooklyn Nets
The Nets are moving from New Jersey to Brooklyn this summer and may just be bringing along someone whom many did not initially expect to make the journey.
According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News, whispers abound that Deron Williams is highly considering re-signing with the Nets, although much could change in the next few months.
Andy Vasquez of The Record found that GM Billy King believes that Deron, Brook Lopez, Gerald Wallace and Kris Humphries make up a good core and has a positive feeling that his superstar will return.
It would be a wise career move for Williams to remain in the Big Apple. The most notable reason for him to stay would be the financial fortune he is bound to amass by relocating to Brooklyn instead of another city.
Here’s a list of what the Nets have to offer D-Will as opposed to another franchise.
Endorsement Deals
During his time in New Jersey, Williams gained sponsorships from Audi, Metro PCS, Bonobos suits, Red Bull and a few others. With a move to Brooklyn, he stands to gain even more as his market expands further into the NYC area.
The star point guard acknowledged that fact in an interview with Bondy back in March.
"“Companies just think the market is going to be great. They see the buzz around the new arena and the fans are excited about a team coming to the borough, and I think everybody is trying to get a head start on that,”
"
Longer Contract
For long-term security, D-Will’s best option is to remain with the Nets. They can offer him a five-year, $109 million deal.
That is one year and approximately $28 million more than any other team in the league can legally put on the table.
The 27-year-old obviously cares about consistently earning a paycheck and was one of the only elite players to go overseas during the lockout. He signed a one-year, $5 million deal to play with Besiktas in the Turkish Basketball League during the summer of 2011.
Potential Contender
Williams has publicly stated that his No. 1 desire is to win a championship.
"That's first and foremost: I'm gonna go where I have the best chance to win," said Williams in an interview with Mike Mazzeo of ESPN.
If Billy King can retain Humphries, Wallace, Lopez and Williams while getting some luck in the lottery, this team is on the cusp of contending.
The Nets traded away a top-three protected pick to Portland to acquire Wallace at the trade deadline, meaning they’ll need a lucky bounce to actually get that pick back.
They definitely have history on their side.
Cleveland acquired the No. 1 pick last year with a selection acquired from the Clippers that had a 2.8-percent chance of winning. In 2008, the Chicago Bulls, who only had a 1.7 percent chance at the top pick, won Derrick Rose.
Perhaps the Nets can get some luck in 2012, as they have a 7.5 percent shot of landing the No. 1 pick, which would unquestionably be Anthony Davis.
Adding Davis to that core would definitely spell playoffs in Brooklyn and solidify what would be a potential championship contender down the line.
