Every Wednesday here at The SEC Blog, we will update you on the latest commits, decommits and rumors in the recruiting world.
Commits
Coach Hugh Freeze and the Ole Miss Rebels got a big commitment from the junior college ranks over the weekend. Marquel Combs, a 6'3", 305-pound defensive tackle from Pierce College in Woodland Hills, Calif. committed to the Rebels on Sunday. He's rated as a 4-star prospect according to 247Sports.com. When he arrives in Oxford, Combs will have three years to play two seasons for the Rebels.
Tennessee defensive coordinator Sal Sunseri will be getting some help in 2013. Dominic Zanca, a 6'2", 230-pound outside linebacker from Alamonte Springs, Fla. committed to the Vols on Friday, the day before the Orange and White Game. Zanca is rated as a 3-star prospect according to 247Sports.com, and ranked as the No. 47 outside linebacker prospect in the nation.
News
Freeze locked up Combs over the weekend, and now maybe we know why. The first-year Ole Miss head coach is using a unique recruiting tool.
Freeze was the real-life high school coach of Michael Oher, whose high school and college career was portrayed in the book and the movie, The Blind Side. According to Michael Carvell of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Freeze is using that notoriety as an icebreaker on the recruiting trail.
