4 Reasons Why Bill Parcels Is the Perfect Replacement for New Orleans Saints

John RozumJun 7, 2018

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Bill Parcells is expected to meet with the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday:

"

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton and general manager Mickey Loomis are scheduled to meet with Bill Parcells on Tuesday to gauge his interest in becoming the team's interim head coach while Payton serves a one-year suspension.

"

For Saints' fans this is good news.

Although it remains to be seen whether Parcells will return to coaching, at this juncture, the circumstances in New Orleans appear to make it a bit more possible.

After all, Sean Payton was the understudy to Parcells from 2003-2005 in Dallas. The connection into running the Saints' offense is there, but it would be a whole new ballgame for Parcells.

Nonetheless, if Parcells wanted the job, he could definitely get one more year under his belt. And provided that he does return to the sidelines, here are four reasons why he is Payton's perfect replacement.

Experience

Parcells was been in the league from 1979-2010 and coached for four different franchises, while taking part in a fifth (Miami) as a front office member.

That's four different decades of working in pro football and excluding some years off between changing franchises, 19 years of coaching and 31 years in the league all together.

Compared to whatever other candidates end up becoming possible replacements for Payton, none can match Parcells' amount of NFL experience and how to capitalize on and prepare every minuscule detail.

Reputation

Let's put it this way: Bill Parcells is a coach who was able to control Lawrence Taylor enough that Taylor's overzealous persona never became much of an issue.

Parcells would simply command the locker room from the start.

Yes, New Orleans could bring in a younger coach with less experience and looking to build a reputation.

However, think about who Drew Brees is going to listen to more. Some new guy that has yet to prove anything or a guy like Parcells that can make Brees better?

Not to mention other Saints players like Jonathan Vilma, Ben Grubbs, Marques Colston and Jimmy Graham.

The leaders of the team won't need to worry about the coaching philosophy, because with Payton having served under Parcells, much like Bill Belichick and Tom Coughlin, the disciplinary approach remains.

Proven Success

It's one thing to have a great amount of experience, however, at some point winning must happen. Parcells has enough to match up with a lot of great coaches and before the Giants won two Super Bowls with Coughlin, Parcells did it first.

From 1983-1990, Parcells coached the Giants and went 77-49-1 with two Vince Lombardi Trophies and an 8-3 playoff record.

After leaving the Giants, Parcells resurfaced with the New England Patriots from 1993-96 and lost Super Bowl XXXI to the Green Bay Packers.

After three conference championships, two Super Bowl wins and 183 wins later (including the postseason), Parcells has the resume of a future Hall of Famer.

One-Year Stint

All of Parcells' success aside, if he does end up returning with the headset, we can't expect this to be anymore than a one-year deal.

In short, this is one last opportunity for Parcells to get redemption after a disappointing finish when with the Dallas Cowboys. The Saints have as much talent as anyone in pro football and if there's any coach who can hold up the fort (so to speak), Parcells can do just that.

The NFC South remains a work in progress and is still a couple years away from one-upping the Big Easy, making the pressure of competition isn't as high as other divisions.

Also, the expectations won't be nearly as high since Parcells has been out of coaching for four years. Surely a man like Parcells who has coached 19 NFL seasons has one more left in him, right?
