New York Jets: If Sanchez Delivers, It Will Kill 'Tebowmania'

Matt DienstagJun 5, 2018

What other backup quarterback would be able to summon 36 different television crews for his introductory press conference?

Tim Tebow was welcomed by the New York media today for perhaps the most over-hyped, over-analyzed and over-tweeted press conference for a player that won't be a starter come September.

Tebow diehards have been religiously following the unconventional quarterback since his National Championship days at Florida, but everyone and their mother jumped on the bandwagon when he took over the reins in Denver. Now playing in the largest media market in the world, the circus that is 'Tebowmania' will surely explode to levels that may cause Twitter to add additional servers in order to handle the activity.

However, there is one man that can extinguish the unbearable media frenzy that has seemed to engulf the entire sports world forever.

That man is Mark Sanchez.

If Sanchez can play up to the potential that the Jets envisioned when they drafted him fifth overall in the 2009 NFL draft, you can guarantee there won't be a peep about Tim Tebow. The Jets' fanbase has literally been dying for success from this team, and with Rex Ryan's gloating and guaranteeing of Super Bowls that they have yet to appear in, it's gotten to a desperate level.

The media has crushed Sanchez, especially in 2012. After failing to reach expectations, Sanchez was unable to lead the Jets into the playoffs and was widely scapegoated for the team's disappointing results.

When Peyton Manning was released by the Colts, it was reported that the Jets had expressed interest in obtaining the Hall of Fame quarterback. But speculation ended and media controversy erupted when the Jets gave Sanchez a three-year, $40.5 million extension.

And just when analysts didn't think the Jets could send any more backwards messages, all hell broke loose when they traded for Tim Tebow.

Let's be clear, and let's be honest. The Jets are trying to get attention, and unfortunately that's what the Rex Ryan regime does best. The Giants' Super Bowl run has made the Jets as jealous as their jerseys are green, and they can't stand it. What better way to grab back the attention then to trade for the most famously talked about quarterback in world?

Fans and analysts have begged Jets management to bring in something that will push Sanchez. While Tebow the quarterback isn't necessarily the push, the ridiculous movement that follows him will be. Sanchez will now be scrutinized harder than ever if he fails to meet expectations, which could put the Jets' coaching staff in an awkward position.

However, I don't think that will be the case for Sanchez in year four. Regardless of his contract, it's a make or break year for Sanchez, and after experiencing a losing season and an offseason filled with criticism, there is no doubt that he will have something to prove. More importantly, he has the motivation to keep Tebow from taking his job, and perhaps his NFL career. If there comes a point where Sanchez isn't good enough to out quarterback Tebow, he doesn't deserve to play anywhere in the NFL.

The pressure has never been greater, but hey what can you expect. It's New York and it's the Jets. They put this weight on themselves in hopes of achieving results that the entire world will notice.

I didn't mind the trade for Tebow, because there is no question that he is a talented football player. He has a variety of skills that the Jets can use to their advantage, but the circus has to end. It's gone on long enough, and it will only hinder the progression of this team.

Sanchez has a chance to put an end to 'Tebowmania' once and for all. If Sanchez delivers to the disciples, there will be no Tim Tebow resurrection.
