Has Roger Clemens Been Singled Out?

Michael FitzpatrickFeb 26, 2008

Reports have begun to circulate, claiming that by week’s end Congress will submit a letter recommending that Roger Clemens be investigated by the Justice Department for perjury.

There is no doubt that, in some form or another, Clemens committed perjury during the February 13th congressional hearing.  Lying under oath is against the law and those who break that law should be punished accordingly.

But, are we forgetting that Clemens was not the only one to lie under oath?

Brian McNamee admitted on several occasions during the congressional hearing that he “lied” or was “untruthful” in his statements to federal investigators during their probe of steroid use in Major League Baseball.

Since when is it not a crime to lie to federal investigators?

Clemens should, without question, be investigated for perjury.  Now I am no lawyer, but common sense would indicate that if the law had been fully followed on February 13th, McNamee would have been led out of the hearing in handcuffs.

Why?  Because he sat in front of Congress and admitted to a crime.  He admitted that he had lied to federal investigators while under oath.

Last I checked, Congress and the federal government are not supposed to pick and choose whom they want to prosecute for crimes.  If you commit a crime, you should be prosecuted.

So why has McNamee been conveniently ignored in terms of charges?  Because indicting McNamee would undermine the credibility of Congress’s investigation into MLB steroid use and that of the Mitchell Report—which one senator has actually called “impressive and credible.”

This is not about defending Roger Clemens.  All I am saying is that he should not be the only one to face the music here.  McNamee sat in front of Congress and came right out and admitted that he had perjured himself.

But I guess Clemens is the “face” of the recent steroid issue.
