Lakers Trade Rumors: Why Pau Gasol for Kyle Lowry is a Win-Win Move
With the almost daily trade rumors surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers' Pau Gasol, there has been plenty of speculation on where the Lakers star could be headed to.
No matter what team you would like to see Gasol sent to, no team makes sense for the Lakers the way the Houston Rockets do.
Houston had interest in acquiring Gasol before the season, nearly acquiring the big man before the season began in the three-team Chris Paul trade that was nixed by David Stern.
The Rockets, though, have a need for a franchise type big man and according to NBA writer Larry Coon, Houston is still very interested in trying to acquire the big man.
While Houston would get what they want in Gasol, it likely would have to come at a steep cost by parting ways with point guard Kyle Lowry.
Lowry fills the Lakers biggest need, but Coon also adds that there's no way the Rockets consider dealing the future superstar in a two-team deal.
While that's probably the smartest move by Houston, if things ever came down to it, it's a win-win situation for both teams.
Others around the league think the deal is a positive for both teams, including Sam Smith of Bulls.com who added the following.
"He probably has the best chance of being traded among the current and former All-Star players. The Lakers are woefully short in the backcourt and with depth and athleticism. He was in that aborted preseason deal to the Rockets, and their interest is said to remain the most significant. The deal that’s been most speculated is Gasol for Luis Scola and Kyle Lowry. The Rockets are said to be high on Goran Dragic and Jonny Flynn to replace Lowry, and the Lakers desperately need a point guard under Mike Brown’s system. This is a deal, denied for now, that benefits both teams and seems likely to be made.
"
Looking more closely, it's a move both teams likely should consider as the March 15 trade deadline approaches.
The Rockets would get the guy they covet in Gasol and they do have point guard depth to get by for the time being. You also have to consider an option of then targeting a guy like Ramon Sessions, although they naturally aren't tied to him at the moment.
There's also the option of grabbing Gasol and targeting a point guard in next season's draft, which is a very deep one.
As for the Lakers, they get the legit point guard they need in Lowry and still remain big by keeping Andrew Bynum and possibly landing Scola.
Very few deals come around that both teams win in, but this could be a potential one for the Lakers and Rockets.
