Jeremy Lin: Latest Comments, Expert Analysis and Reaction as Linsanity Rages on
There have been a wide-ranging variety of opinions and commentary on Jeremy Lin since he turned around the 2011-12 season of the New York Knicks.
Some of it has been positive, some of it has been negative, but almost everybody around the league has something to say about what he's doing.
His rise has been unprecedented for so many reasons, and almost every part of his narrative is so incredibly unique that it leaves many simply saying, "Wow."
Lin's story is one of the largest to sweep through the NBA in recent history.
Have You Noticed the Bracelet?
1 of 9Some might not have noticed the bracelet Jeremy Lin wears around his wrist during the game.
The Harvard product is rocking wristbands from Active Faith, a company started by former player Lanny Smith and Anthony Tolliver, who currently plays for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
"In Jesus Name I Play bands, like the ones Lin wears, can be purchased for $3. Among other items for sale: CrossFit shirts are $26, women's yoga tights are $30 and hoodies are $45.
"
Lin was initially introduced to the wrist wear by friend and former teammate Patrick Ewing, Jr. Now that Lin is balling out on the biggest stage, the accessory has become a focal point of attention.
Hold Off on the Tim Tebow Comparisons
2 of 9The comparisons between Jeremy Lin and Tim Tebow were inevitable when Lin first burst onto the scene, but their stories are really two very different ones.
Tebow was a highly sought-after recruit, while Lin couldn't get a college to offer him the basketball scholarship that he was seeking after a successful stint in high school.
Lin is the ultimate underdog.
"The problem is that as stories go, Jeremy Lin makes Tim Tebow seem as interesting as a rain delay. Lin is a much better story because he is a much bigger long shot and is playing much better than Tebow did. He is an undrafted Asian-American guard from Harvard who is playing as well as almost anybody in the NBA.
"
What Has Lin Really Taught Us?
3 of 9There are a lot of things that Lin's story has taught the sporting world.
An inspiration to many around the world for very different reasons, arguably the largest lesson Lin has showed the public is to never be afraid to seize an opportunity when presented with one.
"Baron Davis was gone. The other point guards were out. Carmelo Anthony was injured. Amar'e Stoudemire had to leave the team because of a family death. Lin could have squandered the opportunity and we would have never have noticed. But he made the most of it.
"
Inserted into the game because D'Antoni was desperate and the Knicks had nothing to lose, Lin has gone on a historic run and completely turned around the momentum of New York's season.
For a club that was desperate for someone to step up at the point guard position all season long, Lin did exactly that in emphatic fashion.
How Big Is Lin in the Landscape of the League?
4 of 9Some have made the argument that Lin's rise to success in the NBA has been overblown because he's in a New York market.
While it's true that the media coverage in NYC is unlike other markets around the league, Lin's story would still have been highly publicized had it happened on another team.
However, there are still doubters in that regard, like Norman Chad of the Washington Post, who said: "But trust me, if he were doing his deeds in, say, Portland or Milwaukee rather than New York, he’d be a much smaller sensation."
Sounds like someone might be a little bitter.
It's not just about the market size. With Lin, it's about so much more than that.
It's time to take notice.
ESPN Reacts to Infamous Headline
5 of 9There is no other way to describe this atrocious ESPN headline other than downright inexcusable.
The Bristol-based network caught an unbelievable amount of criticism for choosing to run with the phrase after the Knicks surprisingly lost to the New Orleans Hornets at Madison Square Garden.
After ESPN issued an apology, the company followed it up with some secondary action: "ESPN fired an employee responsible for an offensive headline about Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin."
How many people did this have to go through in order to be posted? Does it really fall on the shoulders of solely the writer who made the poor choice to run with it?
Questions are swirling about how this could have happened, but Lin is attempting to put the whole thing behind him, saying, “I don’t think it was on purpose or whatever, but (at) the same time they have apologized. And so from my end I don’t care anymore."
An eBay Phenomenon
6 of 9NBA apparel, souvenirs and memorabilia have been selling on eBay for a very long time, but Jeremy Lin's game has taken it to an entirely different level.
His D-League jersey was a hot auction item, the jersey from his first game was sold for more than a lot of people would pay for a brand new car, and even yearbooks from his school years are being sold at eye-popping prices.
How creative can people get with the Lin-related items?
Paintings like this one are popping up as the world gets caught up in Linsanity, and it's hard to forecast exactly what types of items will continue to show up.
One thing is clear: The Lin train has rolled into the station, and you're on the outside looking in if not aboard.
The Signs, Posters and Phrases
7 of 9The sign pictured in the slide really says it all.
This is where we are with the impact Jeremy Lin has had on the Madison Square Garden crowd.
We've seen posters like "Everyday I'm HustLin," cries of "Lindemonium" and some even going back to their childhood roots with "Super Lintendo."
This woman is taking the Lin love to an entirely unforeseen level, and she must be a really big fan to proudly display this sign to be seen.
It's even capped off with a little heart.
Reaction in Taiwan
8 of 9Lin's surprise rise this season has given his family a reason to celebrate, but his new-found popularity hasn't come without a price.
After the Knicks knocked off the Dallas Mavericks in a huge matchup on Sunday afternoon, Lin offered a plea to the members of the international media to allow his family to live a normal life:
"One special request I have is for the media back in Taiwan to kind of give them their space because they can't even go to work without being bombarded, and people following them. And so, I just want people to respect the privacy of my relatives in Taiwan. ... They need to live their lives as well.
"
Unfortunately for Lin's family, many are anxious to explore any and every angle of anything or anybody that relates to the Lin and his explosion onto the scene.
Hopefully his wishes can be respected, as he's been filled with humility throughout his incredible ride thus far.
Jason Terry Is Not a Believer
9 of 9Before Jason Terry's Mavericks got carved up by Jeremy Lin to the tune of 28 points, 14 assists and five steals at Madison Square Garden, the veteran shooting guard wasn't willing to give the point guard his place in the spotlight.
Terry said that "ninety-five percent" of Lin's success was related to playing in Mike D'Antoni's system.
Sounds like someone is a little hesitant to drink the Lin-flavored Kool-Aid.
"“If you play 46 minutes (a game) in this league, you have an opportunity to put up some nice numbers,” Terry said. “Again, it is what it is. He’ll have to maintain this pace. It’s going to be tough. Ask anybody: Give them an opportunity, ball in their hands, 20-plus shots and you better do something.”
"
Terry is right in that Lin has been playing heavy minutes and has had the ball in his hands quite frequently, but those are some fairly interesting comments from Terry.
Has Lin benefited by playing in D'Antoni's system? Absolutely.
Is that the sole reason he's found success when given the chance to contribute? Absolutely not.
It's time to give credit where it's due.
