NFL Draft 2012: How Will New Bucs Boss Greg Schiano Impact the Draft?

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

With a number of possible suitors willing to trade up to the No. 2 or No. 3 pick in this year's NFL draft to acquire Robert Griffin III, how the top five picks of the draft will shake out remains mysterious.

Expect Greg Schiano and the Bucs to make things interesting for the next five picks as well.

I fully expect that the defensive-minded Schiano will select the top defensive player on the board with the fifth overall pick, whomever that might be, even if an offensive playmaker like Justin Blackmon falls to them.

So teams hoping a player like Morris Claiborne might drop past the Bucs at pick No. 5 can think again, and better be willing to deal with Cleveland at pick No. 4 if they want the stud cornerback from LSU.

I see the draft playing out as follows: Andrew Luck will go first overall to the Indianapolis Colts. Duh.

But after that it will get interesting. I'd guess the Washington Redskins will trade up to No. 2 with the St. Louis Rams and select Robert Griffin III, and the Minnesota Vikings will take the safe route and select USC offensive tackle Matt Kalil.

For a team coveting Claiborne, a trade with the Browns is the move. There is absolutely no way Claiborne will drop past the Buccaneers, and I think the Browns will take Justin Blackmon if they stay at No. 4.

But I don't think it's likely a team will trade up to No. 4 to take Claiborne as there are elite options lower on draft boards, such as Dre Kirkpatrick from Alabama and Stephon Gilmore from South Carolina.

Of course, if a team doesn't trade up to draft Griffin before the Bucs pick, the Bucs will be in a position to trade back and stockpile picks as well.

Because unless the Redskins bring in Matt Flynn or—it's so crazy it just might happen—Peyton Manning, there's no question Washington would select RGIII with the sixth overall pick.

So it seems highly likely that Morris Claiborne will be a Tampa Bay Buccaneer come next season. But with so much uncertainty at the top of this draft, the Bucs may yet be involved in some moving and shaking.

Hit me up on Twitter—that's where the magic happens.
