NBA Rumors: Kevin Love Should Turn Down Reported Extension with Wolves
The Timberwolves are reportedly set to offer power forward Kevin Love a four-year, $60 million contract extension to remain with the team.
And Love should say thanks, but no thanks. From J. Michael Falgoust of USA TODAY:
"Wednesday, a person with knowledge of the situation who requested anonymity because the deal was not finalized confirmed that Love would be offered a four-year, $60 million extension by the Timberwolves.
If Love doesn't accept that by Jan. 25, he'll become a restricted free agent after the season and will be able to field other offers. Minnesota, however, still can match any offer to keep him and is allowed to exceed the salary cap without penalty.
"
But why would Love—in the midst of a fantastic season seeing him average 25.6 points and 14.3 rebounds per game—take a penny less than the max contract he could earn if he doesn't have to?
Why take four years and $60 million when he could earn $80 million over five? Surely, someone would offer him the max if Minnesota doesn't.
If the Timberwolves are really serious about building a winner around Love and fan-favorite Ricky Rubio, they need to offer Love the max now. Otherwise, he may simply choose to take his $6.1 million player option for next year and leave via free agency in 2013.
Love would be leaving too much money on the table otherwise, if in fact the rumored extension is what Minnesota offers. He's outplayed that offer, frankly.
But if the Timberwolves are really serious about keeping Love, this latest leak is simply a negotiating ploy and not a serious offer. Surely they know Love will turn it down.
As he should.
