UFC on Fox 2: Chael Sonnen vs. Michael Bisping Head-to-Toe Breakdown
On Tuesday, it was announced that Mark Munoz was injured and was forced out of his No. 1 contender fight on UFC on Fox 2 against Chael Sonnen.
Instead of Munoz, Sonnen will now face the brash Brit known as Michael "The Count" Bisping.
Bisping was originally on the card and was going to face Demian Maia, however, he will now step up into the No. 1 contender fight.
These two each have their clear strengths, but let's take a look at an early head-to-toe breakdown of the Chael Sonnen-Michael Bisping matchup.
Striking
1 of 7Although Chael Sonnen showed some solid striking against Anderson Silva at UFC 117, he won't have the edge against Michael Bisping.
Bisping has some of the best technical boxing in the middleweight division, and perhaps the entire UFC, and he will look to use his striking to win the fight.
In his last fight, he picked Mayhem Miller apart to earn a third-round TKO.
In his career, Bisping has 14 wins by TKO, and one submission to strikes.
Advantage: Bisping
Grappling
2 of 7While Michael Bisping does have some outstanding takedown defense as evidenced by his recent fight with Mayhem Miller, Chael Sonnen has a clear grappling edge.
Sonnen was a silver medalist at the World University Championships in 2000, and he has brought that high-caliber wrestling to the Octagon with him.
Due to how little of Bisping's ground game we've seen, he can't be given the edge in grappling. However, if he is able to stuff Sonnen's takedowns, don't be surprised.
Advantage: Sonnen
Submissions
3 of 7Neither fighter has serious submission chops, as Bisping has three wins via actual submission holds and Sonnen also has only three.
However, if you had to give an edge to one fighter, it would be Bisping, only because Sonnen has shown serious submission defense issues.
Advantage: Push
Strength
4 of 7Chael Sonnen is known as one of the strongest middleweights in the division.
With his style of fighting, his smothering and constant attacking, it takes some serious strength to be able to control your opponent for the entire fight.
In Sonnen's last fight, he completely dominated Brian Stann en route to a second-round submission.
For those that don't know, Brian Stann is a big guy, and he used to fight at light heavyweight. For Sonnen to fight and control someone like that, he's a strong guy.
Advantage: Sonnen
Cardio
5 of 7Both of these fighters have some of the best gas tanks in MMA, and neither has ever appeared tired in a fight.
Chael has shown that he can go strong for nearly 25 minutes—he could have made the whole 25—and Bisping's gas tank is just as good.
Cardio shouldn't be a factor in this fight.
Advantage: Push
Variables
6 of 7Sonnen: Chael Sonnen is a man on a mission. He wants a second shot at Anderson Silva and will do anything to get there.
He looked outstanding in his last fight against Brian Stann, as he was never in danger for a second—getting Stann to the ground, controlling him and eventually submitting him.
He'll be looking to do the same against Bisping.
Bisping: Michael Bisping will be coming into this fight looking to earn his first win against a true top 10 opponent. His previous fights against top fighters ended in losses.
Should Bisping win against Chael, he will prove to everyone that he is actually a top 10 fighter, and he will earn his shot against Anderson Silva.
Bisping will look to keep the fight on the feet and pick Sonnen apart.
Prediction
7 of 7This will be a great striker vs. grappler matchup with serious title implications.
Not only will the clash of styles be intriguing, but the buildup over the next week and a half should involve lots of trash talk to get people interested in the fight.
Bisping can talk all he wants, but that won't save him once he gets in the cage—as Chael Sonnen will defeat Michael Bisping by unanimous decision.
Then, after that, Sonnen will call out Silva again...
Except this time, he'll get to fight the Spider.
