5 Reasons Tim Tebow Must Change Positions to Lead Denver Broncos to Super Bowl

Tim LewisJan 16, 2012

Despite John Elway proclaiming at his press conference on the NFL Network today that, "Tim Tebow has earned the right to be the starting quarterback going into training camp next year," Denver Broncos fans should brace themselves for a little less "Tebow-mania" next year.

And that's a good thing, trust me.

Tebow's 9-for-26 performance against the New England Patriots on Saturday night proved once and for all that it's time for Tim to switch positions in order to further his NFL career.

Let's examine five reasons why Tim Tebow needs to switch gears and change his career path in the NFL.

1. 46.5 Percent Completion Percentage

1 of 5

Let that number sink in for a second: 46.5 percent completion percentage.

It was even worse in the playoffs, as Tim Tebow completed just 19 of his 47 passes in two games (40.4 percent).

Obviously, that completion percentage ranked Tebow dead last in the NFL, even behind the likes of rookie quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who managed to complete at least 50 percent of his passes for the Jacksonville Jaguars.

What would we be saying about any other quarterback in the league that was only completing 46.5 percent of his passes?

Mark Sanchez completes 10 percent more of his passes than that, and look how people talk about him!

The bottom line is, you simply can't win long term in this league with a quarterback who can't even complete half his throws.

In fact, a completion percentage of 60 percent is probably the minimum in today's NFL to measure a quarterback as being successful in the passing game.

2. 6.38 Yards Per Attempt

Yards per attempt is considered by many to be the most important stat when measuring quarterback success in the NFL today.

Many Tim Tebow apologists came to his defense after he completed 10 passes for 316 yards in a fluky win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

But in reality, Tebow's 6.38 yards per attempt ranked 28th in the NFL, and for comparison's sake, Aaron Rodgers averaged 9.25 yards per attempt.

Another indication based on facts and reality that Tim Tebow should not be playing the position of quarterback in the NFL.

3. 72.9 QB Rating

Tim Tebow's QB Rating of 72.9 ranked 28th in the NFL, behind the likes of Colt McCoy and Josh Freeman.

A QB Rating of 80 is the absolute minimum for success in this league, and it's probably closer to 85 in today's pass-happy NFL.

There isn't another quarterback in the world that could get away with a 72.9 QB rating while earning as much praise as Tebow.

4. 124 Passing Yards Per Game

Tim Tebow's 124 yards per game ranks dead last in the NFL, and I'm not sure anything else needs to be said, does it?

Today's NFL is about moving the ball down the field through the air and putting up points on the board. Gone are the days of the 2000 Baltimore Ravens winning with a great defense and Aaron Rodgers.

Today, it's either Brady, Brees, Rodgers or Manning (and I'm not talking about Peyton, either).

But what about Alex Smith and Joe Flacco?

Don't worry, folks, those two will be playing their last game of the season this weekend as we prepare for Brady versus Manning—"The Rematch."

5. He Would Be the Perfect Fullback

5 of 5

At 6'3" and 236 lbs., Tim Tebow would be the perfect NFL fullback.

Put another 20 lbs of muscle on him, and we're talking First-Team All-Pro every year for the next 10 years.

If there is one thing he can do exceptionally well, it's put his head down and run the ball. Is there any doubt he wouldn't be a great lead blocker as well?

Tebow carried the ball 122 times for 660 yards (5.4 yards per carry) and six touchdowns this season.

We could be talking about a potential Super Bowl team here if the Broncos can snag at least a second-tier NFL quarterback to team up with Tebow in the backfield.

How much longer will we have to wait for John Elway to announce Tebow as the starting fullback for next season?

Hopefully not very long if you are a Broncos fan...
