Golden State Warriors: Is Mark Jackson a Dirty Coach?

Kelly ScalettaJun 5, 2018

Last night in the game against the Orlando Magic, Mark Jackson had his team foul Dwight Howard over and over again. When all was said and done, there were 36 fouls counted on the Golden State Warriors side of the ledger.

So this brings up the question, is Mark Jackson a dirty coach? At what point is the "hack-a-player" mentality crossing the line?

Bear in mind this wasn't one of those games where he started employing the strategy the last few minutes of the game. He rode it from buzzer to buzzer.

The word "dirty", though, might be a little strong. I like Jackson as a coach, and I can see the logic, but I think what he overlooked was that when you send a guy to the line 39 times, he might as well be having free throw practice.

When he gets that many he can get into a rhythm, and that's what happened. He didn't shoot light's out, but he did shoot above his season average.

It also had the effect of taking away any kind of transition game for the Warriors. They had six fastbreak points in the game.

I don't think it's a question of "dirty" so much as it is a question of "rookie mistake." It was apparent he'd always considered he would do this given the chance and broke out the strategy, only to find it didn't work.

Incidentally, in case you're wondering, the most personal fouls committed by a team in a regulation game was set by the New York Knicks in 1987.
